KILGORE'S TORRENCE LEADS QUALIFYING AT NHRA LUCAS OIL RACE IN RUSK

            RUSK, Texas - The first day of qualifying and time trials at
Cherokee County Motorsports Park's NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series is in
the books.  Rookie driver Steve Torrence of Kilgore, Texas, set the pace in
Top Alcohol Dragster and Chickasha, Okla., racer Jackie Stidham leads the
Top Alcohol Funny Car pack.

            Torrence, a longtime Super Comp racer who made his debut in the
Top Alcohol class in late May at the division's race in Shreveport, La., ran
5.513 seconds at 255.58 mph to grab the No. 1 qualifying spot today.  In the
four weeks that he has been at the wheel of the Top Alcohol Dragster,
Torrence was the runner-up in Shreveport and won the divisional race in
Memphis, Tenn., and the NHRA national event in Topeka, Kan. 

Stidham is the defending division champion.  In his first qualifying effort
of the weekend he ran 5.957 seconds at 244.03 mph.  He won the division's
last race, in Memphis, where he was the No. 1 qualifier.

Top qualifiers in other classes were Craig Bourgeois of Matairie, La., in
Comp Eliminator; J. Adger Smith of Texarkana, Ark., in Super Stock; Fred
Henson of Madisonville, Texas, in Stock Eliminator; Bert Prejean of St.
Amant, La., in Top Sportsman; Billy Parnnell of Doline, La., in Sportsman
Motorcycle; and John Garner of Houston in Top Dragster.

            Racing continues Saturday and Sunday at Cherokee County
Motorsports Park.  Saturday's action will feature final qualifying and time
trials starting at 9 a.m.  Top Sportsman and Top Dragster will run at noon
and 5 p.m. and Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car sessions are
slated for 1 and 6 p.m. Eliminations start Sunday at 9 a.m. and the Alcohol
classes will run first round at noon.

Tickets are $20 Saturday and $20 Sunday.  Children 6 to 12 are $5 each day
and kids 5 and under are admitted free with a paid adult.  For more
