COMMERCE, Ga. (May 15, 2005) - After a rain delay of four hours and five
minutes, eliminations for the NHRA Summit Racing Equipment Southern
Nationals presented by Pontiac got underway at Atlanta Dragway.
Cory McClenathan, who qualified No. 5 in the Carrier Boyz Racing FRAM
AirHog Top Fuel dragster, had an easy first round when his opponent
Scott Palmer broke and couldn't make the call for the opening round. In
a single run, the Lake Havasu City, Ariz., recorded a pass of 4.583
seconds at 322.65 mph.
After the opening round, the rains returned and racing was delayed for
an additional 2 hours and 10 minutes. Racing resumed at about 7 o'clock
under partly sunny/cloudy skies.
In the quarterfinals, McClenathan brought the FRAM AirHog to the
starting line against Brandon Bernstein. It was the 10th career meeting
between the pair.
At the starting line, McClenathan was away first at the green. At the
finish line it was Bernstein crossing first in 4.586 seconds, followed
by McClenathan slightly behind in 4.643 seconds.
"The conditions for the second round changed after that last rain
delay," said McClenathan. "We thought the car would run about a 4.56
second pass, but unfortunately we shook the tires and that slowed us
down. I was away first and it still ran a 64 (4.64 seconds) pedaling
it. I actually thought I won. I didn't see him until after I hit the
chutes and then I realized my win light didn't come on. It's just one
of those things; they had a better car this time.
"This Carrier Boyz Racing FRAM AirHog dragster ran pretty consistent
this weekend. It ran mostly 50s (4.50 second range) until that round
there. We'll just pick up in Columbus where we left off here and go
after them there. We need to pick up points."
As McClenathan heads to the next event in Columbus, he leaves the Summit
Racing Equipment Southern Nationals with 397 points, No. 6 in the
POWERade Top Fuel point standings.
The Summit Racing Equipment Southern Nationals was the first of six
races in seven weeks for Carrier Boyz Racing. Next up is the Pontiac
Performance Nationals at National Trail Raceway near Columbus, Ohio,
next weekend (May 19-22)., then to Topeka, Kan., the following weekend.
After a week off, the series begins back-to-back-to-back races in
Chicago -- Joliet, Ill. (June 9-12), Englishtown, N.J. (June 16-19) and
St. Louis - Madison, Ill. (June 24-26).
