NHRA Warren Johnson Friday Update: WJ Blasts to No. 1 Position in Houston

WJ Blasts to No. 1 Position in Houston

Event: 18th Annual O'Reilly Spring Nationals

Day/Date: Friday, April 8, 2005

Location: Houston Raceway Park, Baytown, TX

Warren Johnson continued his run of strong performances, as he rocketed
to the No. 1 position during the first day of qualifying at the O'Reilly
Spring Nationals in Baytown, TX. After opening with a solid
6.767-second pass on his first attempt, the GM Performance Parts Grand
Am came back in the evening session to blast down the Houston Raceway
Park quarter-mile in 6.707-seconds with a top speed of 205.10 mph to sit
atop the Pro Stock field.

"It rattled the tires pretty hard tonight in second gear, but after
that, our GM Performance Parts Grand Am ran pretty well. We've been
working with a new clutch combination, and this was one of the few times
we've leaned on it. Without shaking the tires, it might have run a 6.68
or 6.69, but we're certainly happy with where we are.

"Naturally being No. 1 only truly counts tomorrow night, but this is a
great place to start the weekend off. Now we have to look at our notes
and see if we can improve our performance, because our competitors are
doing the same thing, and there are a lot of good cars up there that can
step up. We got down the racetrack twice today and learned something.
Tomorrow we'll see if we're smart enough to apply it!"
