DEMKE'S WIN AT SIR MAKES TWO FOR THE NHRA LUCAS OIL SEASON
TUCSON, Ariz. - At the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event
at Southwestern International Raceway, Chris Demke took the win in Top
Alcohol Dragster and Steve Gasparrelli won in Top Alcohol Funny Car. For
Demke, it was his second win in as many races of the 2005 season and for
Gasparrelli it was his second final round appearance.
The Top Alcohol Dragster final was a battle of defending division champs.
Demke, won the Pacific division last year while Federlin is the reigning
Northwest division title holder. Sunland, Calif., resident Demke was the
No. 1 qualifier of the event and beat out Federlin of Oregon City, Ore., in
the final. He ran 5.495 seconds at 257.24 mph against Federlin's
5.591-second, 257.38 mph effort. Demke was runner-up at this race a year
ago.
In Top Alcohol Funny Car Steve Gasparrelli of West Covina,
Calif., got the win light when Larry Miner was unable to answer the call.
Although Gasparrelli was guaranteed a win, he made the most of his run and
posted his best numbers of the weekend: 5.794 seconds at 245.67 mph.
Dean Howerton, Lake Havasu City, Ariz., won in Comp Eliminator
and Kevin Smith of Placentia,Calif., won in Super Stock. The Stock
Eliminator winner was Keith Lynch, Taylorsville, Utah, while Sheldon Gecker,
Surprise, Ariz., won in Super Comp, and Del Cox, Downey Calif., took the
win in Super Gas. The Super Street winner was Surprise, Ariz., racer Gerald
Turczyn and Dwight Downing of Glendale, Ariz., won in Super Eliminator.
Hometown favorite, Ron Amereno of Tucson won in Top Comp.
Pacific Division racers head to Famoso Raceway in Bakersfield,
Calif., for the next NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event, May 20-21.
