NHRA Phoenix Warren Johnson Friday: WJ Slots Fifth Midway
Through Phoenix Qualifying
Event: 21st Annual Checker Schuck's Kragen Nationals
Day/Date: Friday, February 25, 2005
Location: Firebird Raceway, Phoenix, AZ
Warren Johnson continued his learning process with his GM Performance Parts Grand Am on Friday, as qualifying for the Checker Schuck's Kragen Nationals opened on Friday at Firebird Raceway. After opening with a best-in-class 6.762-second, 204.29 mph pass in the first session, WJ came back with a 6.788-second effort in the evening run, leaving him fifth halfway through qualifying.
"Kurt (Johnson's son, and driver of the ACDelco Cavalier) and I swapped engines after Pomona to see how much difference there was in our two cars and/or engines, and it's starting to tell us a tale. Now we just have to pay attention.
"We're definitely headed in the right direction. Our GM Performance Parts Grand Am\= got down the racetrack on both runs, and I believe we can probably improve on our performance tomorrow morning, even though it should be relatively warm around noon. Overall, I think we're in excellent shape."
