REFFNER SETS FAST TIME FOR AARON'S 99 AT LOWE'S MOTOR SPEEDWAY

 

CONCORD, N.C. (October 13, 2004) - The last time that Bryan Reffner started
an ASA National Tour race from the pole was in 1994. Now, a decade later, he
finds himself in the same position at Lowe's Motor Speedway to win his
second career Jani-King Pole Award for the running of the Aaron's 99
presented by Jani-King.

 

Reffner toured the 1.5-mile quad-oval in his No.  80 Menards Chevrolet in
32.816-seconds (164.554 mph), setting a new track record as this is the
inaugural visit for the ASA National Tour to this facility. He becomes the
eighth driver to win a Jani-King pole this season.

 

"That's what we needed after losing Kentucky from overheating and stuff,"
said the Stevens Point, Wis., driver. "We're just happy to be here and we've
been strong on these big tracks. Unfortunately we haven't had a chance to
hold qualifying the last three races (due to rain) and we've been strong at
all of them. So we are happy to have this opportunity and even happier to
get a chance to qualify."

 

As the Aaron's 99 presented by Jani-King is being held in conjunction with
NASCAR Nextel Cup and NASCAR Busch Series qualifying, there will be a lot of
high profile drivers and team owners watching.

 

"We're in Charlotte and in front of a whole lot of Busch and Cup teams and
the whole racing industry is right here so when we roll across for the green
you know we are leading the pack," Reffner said. "For me personally, and for
the guys on my team that work so hard, I want them to be in that position."

 

Qualifying second was Reed Sorenson, driver of the No. 29 Target Dodge. His
time of 32.841-seconds (164.429 mph) was only 0.025-seconds off Reffner's
pace, but the 18-year old driver was pleased to be able to start on the
front row.

 

"We ran on stickers (new tires)," Sorenson explained. "They gave you a
choice of running stickers or scuffs and we ran on stickers and held it open
all the way around.

 

"Starting up front will be very important. There were (a lot of incidents in
practice) so you don't want to get in the middle of that."

 

The rest of the Top-10 starters are Mike Garvey, Tim Russell, Casey Smith,
Kyle Krisiloff, Wade Day, John Dalziel, Todd Kluever and Jay Middleton. 

 

Kevin Cywinski will start 21st after a disappointing run of 34.166-seconds,
the first car to be slotted in per ASA rules by owner points. The two
British drivers from the ASCAR "Days of Thunder" Series made the field. Ben
Collins will start 30th, and John Mickel in the 36th position.

 

Reffner claimed that track position will be critical in the Aaron's 99, and
was already planning his race strategy even before qualifying had concluded.

 

"One thing we know for sure is that tires don't wear much," Reffner said of
the BFGoodrich Traction T/A rubber used on the ASA National Tour cars.
"We're going to go for some long runs (in the Happy Hour session) and see
how the fuel mileage is and how the tires wear. That way we can keep the
stops minimal and try to stay out front as long as we can."

 

The Aaron's 99 presented by Jani-King will take the green flag at 8:45 p.m.
