MOPAR'S HUBINETTE GEARS UP FOR CHAMPIONSHIP RUN
August 26, 2004
Center Line, Mich. - For Team Mopar's Samuel Hubinette, the road to the
Formula D Series finale has been punctuated by three straight series wins and the
recognition of not only the drifting community, but the mainstream motorsports
community as well. With the Formula D Series inaugural championship just on
the horizon, Hubinette is more focused than ever to perform well at Irwindale
(Calif.) Speedway on Sunday.
"Our goal heading into Irwindale is the same as it has been throughout the
entire season," Hubinette said. "We're going to do the best that we can,
concentrating on our performance for this final event. We want to qualify well and
then look for a podium finish. We need to concentrate on this event and, in
doing so, we'll go for the overall goal of winning the championship."
Hubinette's level-headed approach to competition is quite the contrast from
the style his performances have held this season. "The Crazy Swede" has given
audiences glimpses of his flamboyant style, as his drifting runs have been
filled with cutting angles, decisive maneuvers and exciting 360 turns.
"I hope drifting fans will remember my performances this season," Hubinette
said. "I've tried to give them a good show at each event; one that had a lot of
entertainment, speed and high velocity drifting. I think they'll remember
this season because of the Mopar Dodge Viper's involvement as well. To watch this
car in a drifting run has to be exciting. I think that the fans were stoked
to see a muscle car of this caliber perform like it has."
The season has definitely left an impression on Hubinette, who has enjoyed
every minute of his first season as a full-time drift driver.
"I'm going to remember this entire season for a long time to come," Hubinette
said. "When I began this season with Lateral G Racing and Mopar, I wasn't
well known in the sport. It has been amazing to watch all of the publicity that
the sport has gained throughout this season. Winning the first Formula D event
was exciting, but to win three in a row has been unbelievable. The best part
about this season has been that I've gotten to burn up rubber and get paid for
it."
As the stage is set for the Formula D Series final showdown on Sunday at
Irwindale Speedway, Hubinette is looking forward to letting it all hang out.
"Irwindale Speedway is my favorite U.S. drifting course, and it's going to be
a blast to get to end the season there this weekend," Hubinette said. "The
plan is to go out there and just have fun and to make the show fun for the fans.
This is a high-speed course, and I can't wait to lock it up and kiss the
wall. Or at least give it my best shot!"
