ARCA Invades Kansas; Kimmel Quickest

 

KANSAS CITY KS (6-4-04)  More than 30 stars and cars of the ARCA RE/MAX Series took hold of the 1.5-mile Kansas Speedway this afternoon for practice in preparation for Saturday's Kansas Lottery $200 Grand.

 

Veteran Frank Kimmel topped the speed charts with a lap of 164.544 mph over rookie Ryan Hemphill at 164.044.

 

"We're real happy with the car," said Kimmel. "We're running good, but we're trying to find more. We were first and second on the charts all day. Some guys, I suppose, would have been satisfied with that, but we stayed busy all day. The other guys in this series don't stop, so neither can we. We changed almost everything today - springs, shocks and a few other things, looking for more. We weren't quite as quick in that last run so we'll go study our notes and see if we can improve. Overall, we're in great shape. The car drives beautifully."

 

If Kimmel can claim the Pork Pole award in Saturday's morning qualifying session, the Jeffersonville, Indiana driver will tie Tim Steele as the all-time series superspeedway pole winner with 18.

 

Hemphill, who has already won two poles and two victories in only four superspeedway attempts, trailed Kimmel by a tenth of a second in practice.

 

"The car was great from the time we unloaded it," said Hemphill. "Coming off a couple of wins, I've got a lot of confidence. I'm comfortable with the track. It's the same car we've raced with on all the speedways this year except Daytona. It's a good car. We're ready to race."

 

Pryor, Oklahoma driver Christi Passmore was third fastest in practice at 162.567 mph followed by Brent Sherman (162.494) and Jeremy Clements (160.375).

 

In three previous RE/MAX Series events at Kansas, there have been three different winners: Jason Jarrett in 2001, Kimmel in 2002 and Shelby Howard in 2003.

 

Saturday's Kansas Lottery $200 Grand is scheduled to begin at 4 pm Eastern time following Pork Pole Award Qualifying at 11:30 am. Tickets are available at the track starting at $25. The race-day ticket includes a driver autograph session at 1:30, the 4th Annual Oklahoma Joe's BBQ Cook Off and a mix of extreme games on the frontstretch by Vertical Uprising.
