KJ Keeps His Cool in Kansas, Places Fifth on Friday
Event: 16th annual O'Reilly Summer Nationals
Location: Heartland Park Topeka
Topeka, KS
Day/Date: Friday, May 28, 2004
The first day of qualifying for the O'Reilly Summer Nationals produced conditions that throttled the naturally-aspirated Pro Stock cars, with the high temperatures and humidity producing a corrected altitude of over 3,600 feet. Although this sent some teams scrambling to find the right combination, Kurt Johnson and the ACDelco Racing team did not miss a beat, posting two of the quickest runs in each session, with his best effort of 6.871 seconds, 200.56 mph placing them fifth midway through qualifying.
"Overall, it was a pretty good day. I made two good runs, and our ACDelco Cavalier was in the top five on the performance charts in both sessions. We made a few changes, and the car came to life, responding the way we want it to and going straight down the track. We're definitely headed in the right direction, which has this entire team feeling pretty good about our chances."
