tucson resident smith claims victory in race of champions motorcycle class
TUCSON, Ariz. - Racing continued today at Southwestern Int'l Raceway (SIR) at the NHRA Pacific Division Summit Racing Series Finals.  Nearly 600 racers representing tracks from across the division are vying for individual and team championships.
Track teams are comprised of the best racers from each facility competing in five classes including Pro, Sportsman, Street, Motorcycle and High School.  
Today's action at SIR included the Race of Champions, a race within a race where the top points earning drivers from each track squared off in head-to-head competition for a share of the nearly $5,000 purse.  Chris Naffziger of Las Vegas was the winner in the Pro category in his 1970 Nova, and Orange, Calif., resident Chuck Killian Jr. took the win in Sportsman, wheeling his 1969 Camaro.  The Street class winner, Dennis Ward of Wilcox, Ariz., was behind the wheel of his Corsica, and SIR's Joe Smith, of Tucson, rode his '84 Kawasaki to the win in Motorcycle.  High School class winner was Seth Polvadore of Peoria, Ariz., driving his 1976 Pinto.
	Tomorrow's individual winners in Pro, Sportsman, Street and Motorcycle will advance to compete for a national championship against winners from NHRA's other six divisions at the NHRA Finals in Pomona, Calif., in November.  They will each receive $3,500 for participating in the Finals and the national champion in each class will earn an additional $5,000.
