RACERS COMPETE FOR CASH, PRESTIGE AND THE OPPORTUNITY OF A LIFETIME

ASHCROFT, B.C. – Top drivers from 18 racetracks across the Northwest division assembled in Ashcroft today for the first day of racing in the NHRA Summit Racing Series Finals, taking place Sept. 5-7 at Nl’Akapxm Eagle Motorplex. Nearly 500 drivers came out for the chance to compete for team and individual honors, including a share of a purse worth more than $10,600, and the opportunity to advance to the NHRA Finals.

Competitors in the Super Pro, Pro, Sportsman, and Motorcycle/Snowmobile categories will compete for cash awards and the opportunity to represent the Northwest division in the NHRA Finals in Pomona, Calif., in November, which will pit them against winners from six other divisions for a national title and a $5,000 pay-out.

2002 Northwest Division Champion, Lorne Ridley, of Hope, B.C., returns for a chance to defend his title and head back to the Finals. “It was such a great experience, the opportunity of a lifetime,” said Ridley of his championship experience. “Competing at Pomona was amazing, the crowd was huge, and we were treated just like the professionals. I wish everyone had the chance to go.” Ridley will attempt to advance to the Finals in tomorrow’s Race of Champions, which will begin at 1 p.m.

This event also includes a High School category and two Junior classes, who are competing for trophies and bragging rights. Martin Rachel, who won last year’s finals and became the 2002 Pro Bracket Champion, used his winnings to build his son a Jr. Dragster. “My son, Brandon, is always helping with my car, when I won I wanted to do something for him,” said Rachel.

Racing continues tomorrow and Sunday at 8 a.m. Nl’Akapxm Eagle Motorplex is located fourteen kilometers south of Cache Creek, on TransCanada Highway 1. For more information, contact the track at (250) 453-9310.
