CANNON QUALIFIES 12TH; WILL FACE TEAMMATE SCELZI IN FIRST ROUND
SONOMA, Calif. (Aug. 2, 2003) - Being his own new crew chief on the Oakley
Funny Car is presenting unique challenges to driver Scotty Cannon, but
facing his Oakley teammate Gary Scelzi in the first round of final
eliminations of the Fram-Autolite NHRA Nationals at Infineon Raceway
tomorrow is one he'd rather not have.
Cannon qualified No. 12 with his 4.941/296.05 pass from Friday night. He
hazed the tires in both qualifying sessions today and did not improve,
resulting in that most unfavorable situation: racing against your teammate.
"He'll be a hard nut to crack," said Cannon. "He's running good. He's been
down the track every time. But, you know what? It doesn't matter who's in
the other lane; it really makes no difference. What can I say? I took on the
chores of crew chief and I'm doing the best I can. We're OK, we're
qualified. Let's see what happens tomorrow."
