NOTES OF INTEREST: More than 60 teams are entered for the 40th running
of the Daytona ARCA 200 recognized this year as the Advance Discount
Auto Parts 200. This year’s Daytona ARCA classic, with a 4 pm Saturday
start-time, will serve as a pre-amble for Saturday night’s Winston Cup
Bud Shootout. Currently, drivers representing 19 states are entered. Of
the drivers entered, only Andy Hillenburg and Bobby Gerhart are former
Daytona ARCA 200 winners; each is a 2-time winner of the Daytona classic
(Hillenburg in ’95 & ‘97/Gerhart in ’99 & ’02). 3 former ARCA RE/MAX
Series champions are entered to include Frank Kimmel, Tim Steele and
Hillenburg although Kimmel and Steele are winless at Daytona. Kimmel has
finished a career-best 3rd at Daytona in ’01 & ’02 while Steele finished
2nd in ’94 & ’96. Steele has made only 2 Daytona ARCA starts since ’97.
Renowned open-wheel driver Christian Fittipaldi, in a Kyle Petty Racing
Dodge, will make his career-1st ARCA RE/MAX Series attempt at Daytona.
His car owner Petty won the Daytona ARCA 200 in 1979 in his first
superspeedway attempt. NASCAR Winston Cup veteran Greg Sacks, of Port
Orange FL, is also entered. Only 6 ARCA drivers have won from the pole
at Daytona: Benny Parsons '69, Andy Hampton '72, Iggy Katona '74, Woody
Fisher '77, Jeff Purvis '93 and Hillenburg '97. No driver has repeat
wins in consecutive years.
