TEAM TARGET FINISHES 35th IN THE MBNA ALL-AMERICAN HEROES 400
Spencer drops two positions in Winston Cup points race
DOVER, Del. (September 23, 2002) - The No. 41 Target Dodge Intrepid R/T
driven by Jimmy Spencer finished in 35th place in the MBNA All-American
Heroes 400 at Dover International Speedway. Spencer dropped two positions
to 27th in the Winston Cup Championship points race.
Spencer qualified for the 400-lap race in 31st position. The Target Dodge
steadily moved up the field and Spencer noted early on that the car was
pretty neutral in and out of the corners. During the first caution period,
the Team Target pit crew gained five spots on the field by completing their
stop in 14.605 seconds. The team gained five more spots after their second
pit stop of the day, completing that one in 14.021 seconds.
The team was racing competitively in the top-20 until problems arose on lap
277. NASCAR made the #41 Dodge come into the pits because it was leaking
oil on the track. The team tried to assess the damage on pit road but had
to send Spencer to the garage for further review.
"The rear end cooler mount broke and it fell onto the pump," Spencer said
about the problem. "The rear end cooler cools the gear. It broke so the
gear burnt. We changed the rear end cooler and gear and went back out."
Team Target put their car back out on the track on lap 323. Spencer gained
one more position by going back out; finishing 35th, 43 laps down to the
leaders.
"We were running pretty good and were only a lap down when the cooler mount
broke. I think we could have held on and ended up with a pretty decent
finish, but that's the way it goes. We'll try again next week at Kansas
City."
Jimmie Johnson won his third career Winston Cup race Sunday winning the MBNA
American Heroes 400 at Dover. Next on the schedule for the No. 41 Target
team is the Protection One 400 at Kansas Speedway on September 29, 2002.
