NOTES OF INTEREST: First & foremost, the 2002 season marks the 50th
anniversary of the ARCA RE/MAX Series. Born in Toledo OH in 1953, the
well-known stock car tour will be competing at their hometown speedway
when the Jasper Engines & Transmissions 200 rolls off this Sunday
marking the 53rd appearance of the RE/MAX Series at the Toledo track
since 1963. More than 40 first-class teams have already filed entries
all competing for a maximum of 35 starting positions. Leading the parade
of entrants include current point leader Damon Lusk (Pocono & Atlanta
winner) who will make his first appearance at Toledo and the most recent
winner on the tour (June 15 at MIS) 22-year-old rookie Chad Blount who
is only 30 points away from Lusk in second. Defending champion and race
winner Frank Kimmel (3rd in points), also entered, is tied with Bobby
Bowsher (5 wins) with the most Toledo victories. In fact, of all the
entrants, only Kimmel has won at Toledo. Late model standout Fred
Campbell will make his career-1st RE/MAX Series start at Toledo.
Campbell is best known for late model tracks championships at Berlin
Raceway (9), Kalamazoo (3) as well as 2 Iceman Series titles. 3rd
generation drivers Billy Venturini and Jason Jarrett have also filed
entries. Jarrett, the 2001 ARCA Rookie of the Year, finished 3rd at
Toledo in his first appearance in ‘01. ML Motorsports, who fields
Jarrett’s cars, has also entered a back-up Pontiac with the ageless Red
Farmer of Hueytown AL as driver. Farmer also serves as team consultant
to Jarrett. The event also marks the return of RE/MAX Series veteran
Jeff Finley. Toledo Speedway has recently undergone extensive renovation
projects including new pavement, new pitroad, new reserved chair-back
seating, new garage area behind the backstretch with concrete pads and
paving, new pit concessions, restrooms and a new, enclosed tech area for
tech-line procedures as well as many other improvements/additions.
