Babb Banks $5,000 At
Hales Corners Speedway
By John Shea
Franklin, Wis., June 19-Shannon Babb of Decatur, Ill. passed Dan
Schlieper with six laps to go and went on to victory in the 40-lap UMP Late
Model Summernationals feature on Wednesday night at the Hales Corners
Speedway.
The win was Babb's first-ever at the third-mile clay oval and was worth
$5,000.
Schlieper settled for second in the final order, with Kevin Weaver third,
Billy Moyer fourth and Don O'Neal fifth.
Schlieper began the main event from the third position and shot into the
lead on the opening lap as Moyer, Babb, Jeep Van Wormer and Gordie Seegert
Jr. followed. Moyer remained second until Babb took the spot at lap 12.
Babb closed the gap on Schlieper and the two bumped several times while
fighting for position, allowing the now-third running car of Weaver to shoot
past both and into the lead at lap 29. Schlieper quickly regrouped and
worked his way back past Weaver using the inside line in turns three and four
to begin lap 31. Babb followed Schlieper past Weaver and the two resumed
their battle for the top spot.
Schlieper began to lap some of the slower cars at the back of the field
at lap 33, and that was all Babb needed as he quickly closed in on Schlieper
and roared past to take command using the inside line up the backstretch.
Once in front, Babb pulled away and picked up the $5,000 top prize.
UDTRA star Scott Bloomquist finished sixth, with Billy Drake, Bret
Sievert, Van Wormer and Seegert Jr. rounding out the top 10.
Racing continues Saturday night, June 22 at the Hales Corners Speedway
with a full program of UMP late model, sportsmen, modified and Hales Whales
racing. Qualifying begins at 6:15 p.m. with racing to follow. Hales Corners
