NOTES OF INTEREST: The Pocono ARCA 200 will be the 34th ARCA RE/MAX
Series event on the 2.5-mile Pocono triangle since 1983. However, the
first ARCA race staged at Pocono was in 1969 on the ¾-mile oval won by
Bobby Watson in a Dodge. The ARCA series did not return to Pocono until
July of '83 when Bob Schacht won in a Pontiac with an average speed of
123.288 mph. This year’s Pocono ARCA 200 presents an interesting mix of
rookies including leading ARCA Rookie of the Year candidate Chad Blount.
Blount, who is just 22, has never seen Pocono Raceway. Nor has
18-year-old Chase Montgomery who is 2nd in Rookie points just ahead of
16-year-old rookie Shelby Howard, another driver who has not yet seen
Pocono Raceway. Current RE/MAX Series point leader Frank Kimmel, coming
off a win at Kansas last week, is the only former champion entered.
Kimmel has won 4 of the last 5 events. In addition, Kimmel has led 440
laps in 6 events in ’02. Andy Belmont is next in that category with 93
laps-led in 3 races. The Pocono ARCA 200 marks the return of Lebanon, PA
driver Bobby Gerhart who has won the last 2 RE/MAX Series races he has
entered (Talladega ’01 & Daytona ’02). Gerhart is entering a 2nd car
with Ontario, Canada rookie Sean Stafford scheduled to make his
career-1st start. Also entered is Dutch-born driver Michael Vergers who
makes his career-1st Pocono appearance. Tim Steele is the all-time
winner at Pocono with 9 victories including five in a row (’96 through
’98) followed by Schacht with 6 and Bob Keselowski with 5. Mike Wallace
has 3; Jimmy Horton 2 and 1-time winners include Blaise Alexander, Kerry
Earnhardt, Ben Hess, Bobby Jacks, Frank Kimmel, Ryan Newman, Jeff Purvis
and Lee Raymond. Eleven ARCA RE/MAX Series races at Pocono have been won
from the pole.
CURRENT TOP-10 POINTS: 1) Frank Kimmel 1815; 2) Chad Blount 1710; 3)
