Pizzonia to test for BMW WilliamsF1 Team
The BMW WilliamsF1 Team has signed Antonio Pizzonia to be an official test
driver for 2002. The 21-year-old Brazilian driver will continue to compete in
the FIA International Formula 3000 Championship.
"We know Antonio well as he has already done some testing for us and he is a
good choice in addition to Marc Gené, a very experienced driver. The demands
for instant feedback from tests is becoming more and more important, so
having two test drivers is necessary. Our engineers were very impressed with
the work he has done in the past and so we are sure he will be a great asset
to the team," said Team Principal, Frank Williams.
Antonio, who comes from Manaus in the Amazon, and lives in the UK in
Cambridge, started his racing career in karts in his home country in 1991. He
won countless kart championships before turning to single-seater racing in
the UK and winning the Vauxhall Junior, Formula Renault and Formula Three
Championships. 2001 was his first season in Formula 3000. He achieved one
victory, finished sixth in the championship with the Petrobras Junior Team
and he will be continuing with them for 2002.
