NHRA FMDRS: Randy is 'Bayne' of McCornack's title hopes

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - Both number one qualifiers, were upset in the final round of eliminations, as Federal-Mogul Dragster Randy Bayne, and Federal-Mogul Funny Car driver Chuck Cheeseman earned wins at Beech Bend Raceway Park.

Bayne, of Elwood, Ind., earned his first victory of the season with a 5.887 second, 236.88 mph pass to upset Bill McCornack of Lexington, Ky.

Galena, Ohio, resident Cheeseman, defeated his archrival, Marc White with a weekend personal best, 5.858 second, 247.29 mph run. With the win, Cheeseman was able to defend his title at Beech Bend, while earning him his second victory of the season in the North Central Division.

Winners in other categories are David Rampy of Piedmont, Ala., in Comp; Steve Matukas of Alvaton, Ky., in Super Stock; John Gray of Hudson, Ma., in Stock; Lynn Ellison of Owensboro, Ky., in Super Comp; Keith MacPherson of Leonard, Mich., in Super Gas; and Lamar Stevenson III of Montgomery, Ala., in Super Street.

Super Comp competitor and Lubbock, Texas, resident Tracy Dennis was awarded the Best Appearing Car award. Bill Sanders of Benton, Ky., was awarded the Best Engineered Car for his '01 Dodge Viper, Super Gas dragster. John Reikas and his crew from Glendale Heights, Ill., won Best Appearing Crew. The North Central Division Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series makes concludes at Indianapolis Raceway Park in Indianapolis, Oct. 12-13.
