Putnam, Conn. - Team owner Chuck Etchells, whose Etchells Racing Team fields the Sunoco/Matco Tools and Racing Champions/Matco Tools Camaro Z28 Funny Cars in the NHRA's Winston Drag Racing Series, issued the following reaction following R.J. Reynolds' announcement earlier today that they would be leaving as the series' title sponsor at the end of the 2001 season:

"First and foremost, I would like to thank everyone at R.J. Reynolds and Winston for their support of NHRA Drag Racing for the last twenty-seven years. They have been tremendous to work with, and without them many of us would not have been able to pursue our dream of competing on the national level. We are grateful for everything they have done for our sport and wish them well in the future.

"Although naturally we are disappointed by today's announcement, as many have said, it did not come as a surprise. Winston was forced into making a choice by the MSA, and NASCAR is currently riding high. However, I believe NHRA Drag Racing is the up-and-coming racing series, offering sponsors a tremendous bang for their buck.

"We have an outstanding five-year TV package in place with ESPN. Over the last few years, our sport has experienced tremendous growth. These positive trends are due the efforts of NHRA president Tom Compton and his staff, who have worked closely with the competitors to offer sponsors an unparalleled value for their dollar while improving the show for the fans.

"I am extremely excited about the future of NHRA Drag Racing, and join those who see today's events as an opportunity. It is my understanding that the NHRA is close to naming a new title sponsor, a corporate partner whose involvement will have far-reaching benefits for all involved, including increased purses. I am confident the NHRA will continue its forward progress and propel our sport to even greater heights."
