July 16, 2001Following Friday's qualifying for the Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series, the Woodburn Dragstrip Booster Club held its 4th Annual Golf Cart Nationals raising over $1,000. With nearly 40 entries including Rod Fuller, Brandon Bernstein, new Northwest Division Director Mike Rice and Drew Austin (son of Pat Austin), it was Bubba Dallymple and his co-driver Ryan Hazzard who were victorious and took the win.
The Dallymple/Hazzard team crossed the 330' finish line at 14.65 seconds on a 14.40 dial in to the runner up team of Mike Rice and Ron Henderson with a 15.74 second lap with a dial in of 15.70
Round highlights included a crowd protest of Rice and Henderson for excessive breaking (every round) and Bernstein who forgot to put the cart back in forward after backing up from his so-called burnout.
Sunday's pre-race ceremony featured driver introductions and numerous awards but none could compare to the one that eight-year old Britney King received.
Super Street racer Mike Puderbaugh presented Britney with a new puppy while the fans, race teams, and officials of the Northwest presented Britney and her family with a donation of more than $5000 to help pay for some of the medical bills they have incurred with Britney's battle against leukemia. Word around the pits is that Britney named her new friend "Gizmo".
Federal-Mogul's Sealed Power engine brand paid out $2,500 to this weekend's low qualifiers. Rick Santos took home the money in Federal-Mogul Dragster as he covered the Woodburn quarter mile in 5.441 seconds at 258.02 mph. Santos bettered Brandon Bernstein's Friday pass of 5.512, which was a track record. Santos then held the record only to see it fall in Sunday's eliminations to Duane Shields with a semi-final pass of 5.417 seconds at 261.32 mph, which is a track speed record.
In the funny car category, Pat and Bucky Austin traded the top spot back and forth with Pat landing on top to take home the $1,000 prize with a qualifying run of 5.845 at 244.43 mph.
Eugene, Ore., resident Brian Hyerstay led the Comp. Eliminator class while Frank Grossi was number one in Super Stock with his '01 Grand Am and Sean Cour landed on top in the Stock class.
In the Helmet City/VP Racing Fuel Super Shootout it was Shannon Boepple taking the win over Mike Henderson in the Super Comp class. The Super Gas competition was an all Division Seven final with Kevin Kleinewebber beating Dan DiVita. Ron Fitzhugh and his '64 Chevy defeated Steve Domenici in the Super Street final.
The competition the top eight racers in each class that run closest to their index in Friday's time trials.
