NHRA: Pomona Raceway Dragstrip Surface Renovated

POMONA, Calif. - The racing surface at historic Pomona Raceway, site of the season-opening AutoZone NHRA Winternationals, the special NHRA 50th Anniversary Nationals this year, and the season-ending Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals, has been re-paved.

The existing concrete starting line pads on the dragstrip were extended downtrack to the 660-foot mark. In addition to the new concrete, three inches of existing asphalt was removed and replaced from the 660-foot mark to 350 feet past the finish line.

The E.L. Yeager construction company poured the new concrete pads using the latest laser technology, known as the "Superflat System", to create as uniform a plane as possible. The texture applied to the concrete surface, using a technique known as shot-blasting, gives Pomona Raceway a racing surface that matches the majority of concrete slabs currently in place on the NHRA Winston Drag Racing circuit.

Headquartered in Glendora, Calif., the NHRA is the primary sanctioning body for the sport of drag racing in the United States. It presents 24 national events through its NHRA Winston Drag Racing Series. The NHRA has more than 80,000 members nationwide and more than 140 member tracks. The NHRA-sanctioned sportsman and bracket racing series' provide competition opportunities for drivers of all levels. The NHRA develops the stars of tomorrow by offering the NHRA Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series, NHRA Summit Racing Series and the NHRA Street Legal Program. The NHRA also offers the NHRA Castrol GTX Jr. Drag Racing League for youths ages 8 to 17 and its newest series, the NHRA Summit Import Drag Racing Series.
