Track Owner Or Race Promoters Note

The idea of this rule book is to provide a standardization of classes worldwide. By publishing rules for all types of cars. A track owner or race promoter can choose the classes of cars that will work in their given area. A competitor in California will know the definition of a certain type of car just as a competitor in New York will. To hold a large national type race a track owner or race promoter can choose the classes that are popular for that area and which they would like to race. Every one will be on the same wavelength as to what type of cars race in a given class. National type drag races have been drawing a very large amount of racers and with a standardization of classes these events will be even larger. These rules have been written by track owners, racers and race promoters alike and have been laid out so not to favor one manufacturer over another, something that should never be done. All specifications are spelled out in dimensions and are required to be available to all track owners through major slot car distributors.

General Rules

1. Scale: The size of scale to which the cars must be built is 1/24th (or 1/25th) that of the actual race car.

2. Width: All cars may not be more than 3.25 inches (82.6 mm) wide at any point.

3. Wheels: All cars must have front and rear wheels (2 each) with black rubber tires.

A. Rear wheel minimum diameter is 0.950 inches (24 mm) unless otherwise specified.

B. Front wheel minimum diameter varies by class to conform with scale appearance.

C. Front wheels must rotate on their axles.

D. Front wheels must be mounted so that they are below the bottom of the chassis.

E. Front wheels must be mounted in the original position intended for the body style.

4. Clearance: The minimum clearance for chassis and gear is 0.063 inches (1.6 mm). No parts may drag.

5. Guide flag: Only one guide or pickup device per car 1" maximum length.

6. Body: Designs must resemble full size race cars. Wheelbase must conform to the original openings on the body and must be available through normal distribution channels. Good example of scale appearing is being able to tell what kind of car the body represents without referring to the package label.

  • Manufacturers are required to maintain scale proportions or their bodies could be ruled ineligible for competition!

A. Paint: All bodies must be fully painted and opaque when sitting on the tech block. They should be detailed to resemble full size race cars. Exhaust pipes, body lines, injector stacks, mirrors and decals are optional.

B. Numbers: All cars should display numbers and other markings of reasonable size and position which conform to the appearance of full scale drag cars. Permanent numbers may be issued by local tracks for each class for scoring purposes.

C. Interior: All cars must contain a suitably detailed, 1/24th or 1/25th scale full coverage interior with at least a three dimensional driver with helmet, shoulders, arms and steering wheel mounted in the original cockpit position at all times during qualifying and racing. Should be painted but, painting is not required.

D. Windshield: Windshield and windows must be clear or lightly tinted, except that the rear windows on funny cars may be blocked out.

E. Fender wells: Fender wells must be clear or cut out to the horizontal centerline of the front wheels. Trimming for wheel clearance must not extend into the top surface of the body. Must be in the original intended position.

F. Body openings: The chassis must be completely covered by the body when viewed from above, except for the cockpit opening or other legal body openings (such as accurate representations of scoops, etc.). The body must cover the guide flag and tires when viewed from above, except dragsters, altereds, and gasser type bodies.

7. Air control devices:

A. Cars must conform to scale appearance.

B. In general, no connecting wings or side dams front to rear are permitted.

C. Diaplanes must have a maximum length of 0.500 inches (12.7 mm) measured from the extreme leading edge of the front bumper.

D. Rear spoilers must conform to individual class rules.

8. Parts replacement: Any component may be replaced during competition except the original chassis or body. A body may be replaced if significantly damaged during competition (as is permitted in full-scale drag racing). However race director permission is required or the car will be disqualified. Any racer found to have switched their chassis will be disqualified immediately.

9. Any particular car can only be entered one time per class.

10. Any topic not mentioned in rules will be decided by presiding race director or tech official.

Track Records

Official track records for E.T. and top speeds set at national events for each national class should be maintained by the track owner. (track must be certified at the event to within 1"):

1) 1/4 Mile - 55 Ft. (16.76m.)

2) 1/8 Mile - 27.5 Ft. (8.38m)

3) 1,000 Ft - 41.7 Ft. (12.7m)

Record must be backed up during competition in the same event within plus or minus 2%.

Track prerequisites: at all SDRA drag racing events qualifying and racing voltage for all classes will be limited to a maximum of 16.0 volts. This voltage is to be measured at the braid unloaded, without cars on the track using accurate digital voltmeters to record the values.

Track Record Procedures

The standard of excellence of performance in drag racing is the track record. These records are established under controlled conditions at events throughout the season. Each record run is made under close observation of starting procedures, running, finish, and timing. Each car is thoroughly inspected to determine it's compliance with class requirements, including weight and motor. In a sport where records play such a vital role, every effort is made to maintain their accuracy and validity. In order to insure the validity of all new records, a backup performance of within plus or minus two (2) percent of the new mark is required at the same event. If two contestants tie for the elapsed time record to the thousandth of a second at the same event, the tie-breaker will be the fastest mile-per-hour reading for the run that establishes the record. In the event a tie still exists, the contestant accomplishing the record run earlier in the event, will be awarded the record. If the record is tied at a later race, the record will stay with the driver who set it first. Similarly, if two contestant tie for the speed mark, the tie-breaker will be the quickest elapsed time on the run that established the new national record. You may set speed mark independent of the elapsed time record; records may be set until the driver is eliminated from further competition. A contestant cannot set records with one car, then complete in elimination's with another car. Only the driver holding the record at the conclusion of the event will be credited with the record. A driver setting and then losing a record at the same event will not receive credit for establishing a record. Index records are not required to be backed up. (see index rules for clarification)

Black Flag

Any car that is a hazard to spectators or other competitors can be removed from competition. This means cars with sharp edges, cars that continually deslot etc. The race director or technical director has the final decision on this determination.

Break Rule

During elimination's only. A competitor suffering mechanical difficulty during pre-staging may request a one minute grace period to resolve the problem and return to competition with one minute to stage. If the problem cannot be resolved, the other competitor will receive a bye and will have one minute to stage.

Bye Runs

In any round of elimination's where there are an odd number of cars, one driver will receive a bye run. The top qualifier receives the bye in the first round. Subsequent bye runs will go according to the official SDRA ladder sheets. May red-light and still gain lane choice. He or she is the winner unless there is a centerline violation.

Disqualification's

All elimination runs are subject to the first or worst rule. When this occurs the driver committing the worst violation is eliminated. Should a driver receive a red-light foul start, and the opposing driver cross the lane boundary line, the latter infractions would prevail and the driver committing the foul start would be reinstated. In determining lane boundary crossing violations, it is considered a disqualification when any portion of a tire completely crosses the painted centerline on the surface of the track not including the shut down area if one car crosses the centerline and causes the car in the opposite lane to cross the centerline the car causing the crash will be disqualified. If it can not be determined by the race director as to which car caused the crash a re-run will occur. In cases where both contestants cross the center line, independent of each other the driver crossing the centerline first will be disqualified. Additional grounds for disqualification, suspension, and/or expulsion are: 1) unsportsmanlike conduct, improper language or conduct detrimental to racing: 2) any condition considered unsafe, unfair or out of order. If a driver is disqualified during competition for any reason prior to the actual start of a race, he cannot be reinstated. Any driver and/or pit crew member found to be under the influence of alcoholic beverages or drugs, will be ejected from the event. Such a condition is cause for suspension, and/or revocation of competition privileges.

Drivers

The driver of the car must be the same person presenting the car for technical inspection and registration. It is not permitted to change drivers during competition. There should be a drivers meeting prior to qualifying to discuss race procedures. Drivers with specific questions need to ask about them at this time. If you do not ask about them at this time it is presumed that you understand the race procedure.

  • When staging the cars, members of the drivers pit crew, or friends etc. May not interfere with the other competitors staging of their car. This includes cleaning of the track or braid, gluing of the car etc. Drivers must prepare the track in the starting line area which will be defined by the raceway owner in the driver's meeting prior to the start of the race. And must glue their own car in all classes with the exception of Jr. Dragster, Jr. Funny Car or persons with disabilities which allows one helper in the staging area but, there still can not be any interference with the other driver. Any violation of this is grounds for disqualification!

Index System

If you as a track owner or race promoter wish to run super stock, factory experimental etc. On an index system the following will give you some guidelines. You can have a qualifying session to determine your class indexes (or records) and then use them for a dial-in when you run cars of different classes together much like a bracket race (e.g. SS/A record at 1.00 vs. SS/B record at 1.20 SS/B would get a .200 head start). Any competitor running under there index (record) will be disqualified and the new lower index will be in effect for the rest of the race and for all future races. The driver resetting the index (record) could receive bonus points towards a championship series if one is in place at that time. Indexes (records) are not required to be backed up.

Ladders

Category pairings are based upon established SDRA official ladder charts. Qualifying elapsed times determine ladder positions (example: 1 vs. 16; 2 vs. 15; 3 vs. 14; 4 vs. 13; 5 vs. 12; 6 vs. 11; 7 vs. 10; and 8 vs. 9). Once established, pairings are not changed for any reason.

Lane Choice

In all categories, lane choice is determined by elapsed times. The contestant with the best qualifying E.T. gets first-round lane choice, and in subsequent rounds, lane choice goes to the lowest et of the pairing in the previous round.

Professional Driver Classification

Professional driver are those individuals that are sponsored by a manufacturer or receive their parts either free or at less than retail price. This does not include track owners or track employees. These class restrictions are necessary to give the entry level racers classes to compete in. As factory racers you are likely to receive parts before they are released to the public for testing or evaluation. Also as sponsored racers you have demonstrated your skills as a racer and with that you need to help the sport continue to grow and by not dominating the lower classes this will be possible. There have been enough classes allowed for you to compete in and not are all high end so this sport can still be fun for all. The following classes are allowed, but not limited to professional drivers. AA/FA, AA/FD, AA/FC, A/FX, SS/A, B/A, Brackets, Blown Doorslammer, Factory Modified Pro-Stock, Quick-16, Street-Rod, Super-Comp, Super-Gas, Super-Street, Top-Gun, Top-Fuel Dragbike, and Top-Sportsman. Any violation of this is grounds for disqualification!

Protest Procedure

The protest procedure for armature, magnet, can, body or chassis violations is as follows. You may buy a look at any competitors car for $3.00. This money is paid to the technical director for the event and he will contact the suspected car owner and have the party bring the car to the technical inspection area for you and the technical director to inspect. If you are satisfied, the car owner will collect the $3.00 buy a look fee. If you are still not satisfied you may apply the $3.00 fee towards a formal protest which amounts to you putting up money equivalent to two times the amount of the retail cost of the armature. The motor is then disassembled, the armature then has the epoxy destroyed with a torch and is unwound, the wire is checked for the correct amount of turns and the diameter of the wire. If the motor is found to be legal the car owner receives the money. If it is illegal the protester will receive the protest fee back and the offending party will be disqualified. Any other type of protest must be specific and can be performed on the $3.00 buy a look procedure outlined above.

Qualifying

The qualifying order is based on the numerical order of the registration forms. In the first round the name called first by the race director will get the right lane. In the second round that driver will go to the opposite lane. If the race has more than one qualifying session the driver will switch back and forth accordingly. Each car entered in class racing will be allowed a minimum of two qualifying attempts which will be used to determine qualifying position which will be used to set up ladder charts for elimination's. One run should be recorded for each lane. Each time and speed must be recorded. No timed runs are required for breakout, or bracket classes. In order to constitute an official qualifying attempt, a car must self-start and finish. For all categories of competition including E.T. classes. An individual vehicle cannot be used for multiple entrees in the same class. In the event of identical qualifying et's the driver with the faster top speed, recorded on the qualifying runs in question, will be awarded the lower qualifying position. If it is still a tie the driver running the low E.T. first in qualifying will be awarded the lower qualifying position.

Registration

All cars shall be inspected and pass technical inspection for their class. In all cases, the technical inspector's decision is final. Failure to comply with rules will be pointed out by the technical inspector and problems must be corrected before the car can participate in competition. Competition will not be delayed solely to enable an entry to correct problems. If the failure to pass technical inspection is due to cheating (such as changing the tag on an armature), the car will be disqualified from competition and the entry fee forfeited regardless of who performed the illegal modification! At national or regional events, inspected cars should be impounded until qualifying. The chassis and body should be marked with a number made of non-removable paint or ink to prevent swapping of such parts during competition. Except for E.T. bracket classes, drivers may enter a maximum of two cars per class at national or regional events.

Single Runs

In situations where a driver is making a single run, he is considered the winner once he stages, receives the start signal and finishes the run. This run is used to determine lane choice in the next round.

Staging

Once a car reaches the front of the staging lanes for a run, it must be prepared to race. In order to be a legitimate race winner, a contestants car must self start and cross the finish line. If for some reason the car should break after it has moved off the start line the contestant can push it over the finish line with-in the ten (10) second limit to finish the run. A time of one (1) minute will be allowed between runs for contestants to stage. Failure to stage upon the starter's instructions is possible grounds for disqualification. After proper staging of both cars, it is not allowable to re-stage for a second time.

Starting System

Top Fuel, Funny Car, Pro Stock, Pro Stock Motorcycle, Top Alcohol Dragster, Top Alcohol Funny Car, Super Comp, Super Gas, and Super Street utilize the three-amber "Pro Start" Xmas Tree. All amber lights are activated simultaneously, with a four-tenths delay to green.. All others using a full three-amber countdown with five-tenths delay between light.

SDRA Road Racing Section.

By Popular Demand The SDRA has incorporated some simple rules for Raceways to run their Road Racing events by. These rules use the basic premise of the Drag Racing rules. By not having Imposed Price Restrictions which forces customers, raceway owners, and racers to buy products that are of lesser quality! You will also find that the motor rules are less restrictive (i.e. allowing shunt wires to be used so that more racers at least finish the race)! This modification definitely increases the longevity of the motor which in turn increases the racers enjoyment of Slotcar racing). So give them a try and let us know how you like them. Please give us suggestions on how to improve them for next year.

"THE SDRA IS LISTENING! BELIEVE IT."

General Rules:

Glue Conditions (Raceway Choice)

  • Limited Glue

Glue zones must be clearly marked. Glue may be applied in these areas only. Glue may be removed from the turns with a clean, dry, rag only on your assigned lane. All gluing and cleaning of the track braid and straight sections must be completed before the power comes on. Nothing may be put down or removed during the racing.

  • Spray Glue

The track will be cleaned and sprayed prior to the racing and may be re-sprayed as deemed necessary by the race director. The track surface in the turns may not be touched or altered in any way without specific and prior race director approval.

  • All braid and the track surface of all straight sections may be cleaned in both spray glue and limited glue conditions.
  • If an accidental spillage of cleaning solution occurs, the race director may re-spray the affected area to restore fair racing conditions.

Qualifying for all classes. (Raceway Choice)

  • May be determined randomly, such as drawing from a hat, or letting the computer make the choice. One or two minute timed session for fast time, or total laps and sections with no byes. SDRA events should use the staggered system. This rotation for tracks marked with American raceways colors is described as follows:
  • Consi & Semi Races: Racers will race on either the red or the black set. Racers on the red set (red, green, blue, purple) rotate down the track to purple and then jump to red continuing rotation down the track. Racers on the black set (black, yellow, orange, white) rotate up the track to white and then jump back to black continuing rotation up the track. Heats can be anywhere from 2-4 minutes in length.
  • Main Event Race: Racers running on the red set will rotate down the track to purple, keeping on the red set. After running purple, rotate to the black lane of the black set. After running white, jump to red and rotate as indicated for the red set. Continue until all eight lanes have been run. Heats can be anywhere from 3-5 minutes in length.

Track Calls

The power will only be turned off for unfair or dangerous situations. The following are acceptable reasons:

  • Braid up.
  • Power failure (one lane or all).
  • Debris in slot.
  • An unreachable car.
  • Lap counter or track equipment failure.
  • During a track call, there will be absolutely no work performed on the cars or lane preparation. Doing so will result in a 20 lap penalty. A second infraction will result in disqualification. This includes the pit helpers of the driver.

Lap Counter

The lap counter is considered correct unless it can be proved with out a doubt. The counter should be corrected if necessary (as when a car crosses in the wrong lane). If a major error occurs the race director may

  • Assign responsible persons to count laps or verify the counter.
  • Add or subtract mutually agreeable laps by the race director, or marshal.
  • Restart the segment.
  • Restart the race from the latest possible point.
  • Laps should not be added or subtracted unless the race director is positive the lap counter is incorrect.

Marshalling

  • All drivers are expected to marshal the race preceding their own. Substitute marshals must be acceptable to the race director and drivers.
  • Failure to fulfill marshalling responsibilities may result in lap penalties and/or disqualification.
  • All cars may be impounded by the race director after all races to insure fair and proper marshalling responsibilities.
  • Cars will be returned and move-up drivers will be given equal time to prepare for upcoming races.

Lane Change (Raceway Choice)

  • Following each lane change, all cars must be returned to the track where they stopped. Lane change can be anywhere from 1-4 minutes in length.
  • Lane change cards should be used. However they should be constructed of thick paper in case someone forgets to remove the card from the track before the start of the segment.
  • Placing a car back onto the track in an advantageous position, will result in a five lap penalty. A second infraction will result in disqualification.
  • It is the drivers responsibility to know where the car stopped. When a car is removed from the track during racing, the same rule applies.
  • Corner marshal's should notice the cars stopping in their section and pay close attention to cars near the lap counter section.
  • At the conclusion of each race, cars will be left on the track until the order of finish is positively determined.

Track Power (Raceway Choice)

  • In all SDRA events, qualifying and racing voltage for all classes should be limited to a maximum of 14.0 volts.
  • This voltage is to be measured, unloaded, without the cars on the track using accurate digital voltmeters to record the values.

Controller Specifications

  • Any controller / choke may be used as long as the controller / choke uses no batteries or additional power sources to increase or regulate voltage or amperage at track braid.
