Letter From Europe First Look First Drive | 2026 BMW iX3 World Car and EV of The Year
By Andrew Frankl
European Bureau Chief
It’s the same old story., ”you have to be in the right place at the right time” and your reporter certainly was.
As you may have read in the specialist automotive press 57 automobile writers have voted BMW’s iX3 not only CAR of the Year but they also named it EV of the year, a very rare double honor!
Is it that good I hear you ask? The answer has to be yes. BMW have spent 2 billion dollars on a brand new plant in Debrecen, Hungary. Took them 7 years but they got there.
What is so special about the iX3? Certainly not the looks. Even the chief stylist would agree that beautiful it isn’t.
We drove it all over Hungary and not one little school boy looked twice like they do with exotic automobiles. No. This SUV’s beauty is under the skin.
We were in Budapest just as the first test cars were being released to journalists and jumped at the opportunity.
The iX3 has 469 horsepower and does 0-60 in 4.9 seconds.
The interior is pretty futuristic but in a sensible way, even older folks could figure out the basics. Mind you, they might search for a start button before realizing that there isn’t one!. You pull the lever into D and off you go in complete silence.
The company claims that the iX3 is good for about 450 miles which looks great and sounds great but when some engineers tried to go from Debrecen to Munich on a “full tank” they crawled into the factory with just 2 percent of electricity power remaining.
I had a very interesting experience at the Hotel Intercontinental as I promised to return the Bimmer fully charged.
- Step one :you drive into the garage.
- Step two you find the charger.
- Step three you find the gizmo where you have to pay.
- Step 4 you have to link the QR code to your phone, make a payment and finally it will let you charge.
So no phone...no charge AND to make it worse the gizmo with the QR code is so high up on the wall that if you happen to be 5ft 2 you need a ladder!
The good news is that charging is becoming faster and faster but even then after our full day of “Ultimate Driving”, midnight came around quickly, No Fun, but filling it up” was the car maker's request and necessary to be ready for our next day's additional several hour road test.
Fully charged we headed for the countryside for what I can only describe as a magic afternoon. My girl (and Auto Channel contributor) Kata lives in Budapest and did some of the driving while listening to some wonderful rock and roll which seems to be making a comeback. We certainly loved it.
This iX3 is the first Neue Klasse automobile. It is all wheel drive with exceptional road manners as one would expect from BMW. The ride and handling on Michelin (of course) tires is everything you would expect from a company well-known for its racing heritage.
The price în the US is likely to be around 60 thousand dollars and if you like the brand and like EVs you should definitely take it for a spin.
New car, new concept, from the ground up (took them 7 years.
I loved it!
2026 BMW iX3 Spec and Driving Impressions
Compiled For The Auto ChannelBy Alex Grant
Quick Take
The all-new BMW iX3 is more than a replacement for the earlier iX3 idea. It is the launch vehicle for BMW's Neue Klasse era, the model that introduces the brand's new EV architecture, 800-volt charging capability, major software consolidation, a new panoramic display concept, and a stronger emphasis on classic BMW driving feel.
It is also now a global headline-maker, having been named 2026 World Car of the Year and 2026 World Electric Vehicle. For buyers, that means the iX3 enters the market not just as another electric luxury crossover, but as BMW's statement vehicle for what comes next in premium EV design, performance, charging speed and day-to-day usability.
In plain English: this is BMW's big reset, and early international impressions suggest it may be one of the most important EV launches the company has made in years.
Why It Matters
- First production BMW built on the Neue Klasse EV architecture.
- Winner of 2026 World Car of the Year.
- Winner of 2026 World Electric Vehicle.
- Introduces BMW's new "Heart of Joy" dynamics control philosophy.
- Brings 800V charging, rapid replenishment, and long-range capability to the compact luxury SUV class.
- Expected to set the tone for many future BMW EVs arriving through 2027 and beyond.

Driving Impressions From Around the World
General verdict: The iX3 appears to have surprised a lot of experienced reviewers by feeling more like a traditional BMW than many expected from a heavily computerized EV crossover.
Ride and body control: Early prototype drives reported tight body control, limited roll and pitch, and a ride/handling balance that made the vehicle feel more composed than many electric SUVs in this class.
Steering and road manners: Reviewers generally described the steering, turn-in and chassis response as natural, precise and confidence-inspiring, though some noted the final tactile magic of BMW's older hydraulic era is still a very high bar.
Power delivery: The new motors and electronics have been praised for smoothness, fast response and better integration between acceleration, braking and regeneration.
Cornering feel: Several reviews said the iX3 avoids the clumsy, top-heavy behavior that can make some electric crossovers feel remote or heavy.
Interior and interface: The new panoramic display environment has drawn attention for its modern presentation, quick responses and better voice interaction, although its reduced-button philosophy will still divide traditional BMW buyers.
Bottom line: The worldwide press reaction so far suggests the iX3 is not just technically advanced. It also appears to preserve enough BMW flavor to matter to long-time brand loyalists.
What BMW Changed vs. Previous EV Thinking
- New Gen6 eDrive system with improved efficiency.
- Structural battery integration to improve rigidity and packaging.
- Silicon-carbide inverter technology for lower losses and better thermal efficiency.
- BMW "Heart of Joy" central control strategy tying drivetrain, braking and recuperation together.
- New electronics backbone with multiple high-performance computers or "superbrains."
- Fresh cabin philosophy built around panoramic forward display and simplified physical interfaces.
Auto Channel Assessment
The BMW iX3 looks positioned to become one of the benchmark premium electric crossovers of its cycle. It brings the kind of range, charging speed and software ambition that buyers now expect from next-generation EVs, but the more important story may be that it appears to drive with discipline, balance and polish.
That matters because plenty of electric SUVs are fast, and many are full of screens. Far fewer feel engineered around the driver's confidence. If the production iX3 fully delivers on what the early worldwide drives suggest, BMW may have done something more important than launch a new EV: it may have successfully re-taught the market what a BMW electric crossover is supposed to feel like.
Buyer Watchouts
- Final U.S. trim ladder and full option-by-option pricing are still being finalized.
- Wheel and tire choices can affect final real-world range.
- UK/WLTP range numbers are not directly interchangeable with U.S. EPA estimates.
- Some software-driven features may vary by market or arrive in phases.
