DriveCam Video Systems Granted Third Patent; Patents Strengthen the Company's Technology Leadership PositionSAN DIEGO--Nov. 5, 2002--DriveCam Video Systems, a developer of fleet safety technology, today announced that it has been issued a third patent for technology related to its DriveCam video event data recorder.
DriveCam also received two other patents in 2002 and has additional patents pending. U.S. Patent No. 6,389,340 was granted for the vehicle data recorder, a self-contained device for capturing video imagery in response to a triggering event. U.S. Patent No. 6,405,112 covers enhanced data retrieval capabilities. The most recent, U.S. Patent No. 6,449,540, represents a method for detection and recognition of a predetermined wave pattern produced external to a vehicle.
These patents relate to the DriveCam Video Event Data Recorder, a tiny video camera mounted behind a vehicle's rear view mirror that records what drivers see and hear. DriveCam is part of the company's Driving Feedback System used by commercial fleets to evaluate driver performance. Used by thousands of commercial vehicles, the Driving Feedback system has been proven to reduce the frequency and severity of collisions by changing driver behavior.
"These patents strengthen our leadership position as a provider of video event data recorders for commercial fleets," said Ed Andrew, president of DriveCam. "Our technology incorporates video of actual driving events, giving fleet managers the ability to counsel drivers and improve driving performance. This translates into fewer accidents and reduced operating costs. At the same time, the video recording also provides indisputable evidence when an accident occurs."
The complete Driving Feedback System includes the DriveCam video event data recorder, HindSight 20/20 software, a manager's guide, driver guide, and instructional videotape. The DriveCam video recorder measures G-forces caused by activities such as hard braking, acceleration, harsh cornering or collisions, which trigger it to save a driving event for later viewing. HindSight 20/20 is a Windows-based software program that allows fleet managers to download and view driving events and use them to evaluate individual driving performance.
About DriveCam Video Systems
DriveCam Video Systems develops fleet safety technology that improves driving performance and lowers operating costs. Based in San Diego, the company's Driving Feedback System combines video technology and management software to identify high-risk driving habits. By changing driving behavior, DriveCam has lowered annual accident rates by 30% to 50%. When accidents occur, DriveCam recordings provide unbiased evidence to determine fault and expose fraudulent insurance claims. Used by thousands of commercial vehicles, the Driving Feedback system has been endorsed by the insurance industry as an effective loss control system.
