Governments of Canada and Yukon invest in 13 infrastructure projects throughout the Territory

WHITEHORSE, YK, June 28, 2017 /CNW/ - Rural and northern communities have unique infrastructure needs. Investing in modern and efficient infrastructure supports local economic opportunities, which goes hand in hand with improving family income, job opportunities and quality of life for those living and working in the North.

Today, the Honourable Larry Bagnell, Member of Parliament for Yukon, on behalf of the Honourable Amarjeet Sohi, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, and the Honourable Richard Mostyn, Minister of Highways and Public Works, on behalf of the Honourable John Streicker, Minister of Community Services, announced joint funding of over $26.9 million for 13 projects through the Small Communities Fund.

This funding will make important upgrades along the Klondike, Alaska and Dempster highways as well as help reconstruct Campbell Highway. In addition, the Klondike River and Clear Creek bridges will be rehabilitated.

Once complete, these projects will help improve driver safety and help secure the delivery of food and goods for residents and businesses.

• The Government of Canada will provide more than $180 billion in infrastructure funding over 12 years for public transit, green infrastructure, social infrastructure, transportation that supports trade, and Canada's rural and northern communities.
• Budget 2017 committed over $10.1 billion in trade and transportation projects across Canada. This amount includes $5 billion that will be available for investment through the Canada Infrastructure Bank.
• To meet the unique needs of rural and northern communities, Budget 2017 committed to invest $2 billion to support a broad range of infrastructure projects.

The governments of Canada and Yukon are announcing funding for infrastructure projects in communities across the territory. The Government of Canada will provide up to $20,235,000 through the Small Communities Fund for the 13 projects. The Government of Yukon will cover any remaining costs. The details of the funding were delivered to Yukon and will be released publicly at the completion of the tendering process.
