A couple of years ago, the Honda S2000 burst onto the scene in an impressive way. It continues to impress sportscar folks with its 2002 edition - its maxi-stiff steel body, road gripping suspension, laser-like steering and and engine that punchs in at rev levels where other cars max out. The 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine makes 240 horsepower, and the torque really kicks in around 6000 rpm (redline is at 9000). We found a deserted stretch of I-5 - took it up to 115mph - marveled at its rock steady feel - dropped down into the 90s where it just wanted to cruise. Serious fun.

We enjoyed the improved radio, the new glass window in back, the the enhanced short-throw shifter. The top converts with a couple of manual latches then the electrics take over - the top-down ride is smooth and easy, almost like you are driving under the wind. We like the ergonomics of the switches and their easy proximity to the steering wheel. All in all, the S2000 executes its Prime Directive beautifully - excellence in sports car performance.
