The Mustang was completely redesigned for 1967. It was longer, and wider but it did have the same 108 inch wheel base of its predecessor. The grille opening was enlarged for a decidedly meaner look, while the rear taillight panel was concave. The fastback became a full fastback, and simulated rear quarter panel scoops were used on all three body styles.

The front suspension was widened and redesigned which resulted in a better ride. The optional front disc brakes came with power assist and the 1967 Mustang was the first to use a dual hydraulic brake system. Actually, all U.S. built cars had to have such a system as it mandated by the government.

Engine selection remained the same as in 1966- but with one major exception. The 390 c.i. big block, rated at 320 hp, gave a serious performance boost to the Mustang. This brought a higher level of acceleration to the Mustang at the expense of handling. The 390 weighed about 300 lbs more than the 289 and all of the weight was on the front wheels- resulting in about a 59%/41% f/r weight ratio. This isn't as bad as it sounds as a typical front wheel drive car of today has a typical 65%/35% ratio. A total of 28,800 Mustangs were equipped with the 390. The 390 could be had with or without the GT Equipment Group.

The previous hot-shot, the 271 hp 289 V-8s popularity waned, as only 472 were built. The GT Equipment Group option was still a mandatory option with the 271 hp 289 engine.

The premier performance Mustang was the GT equipped with the 390 c.i. V-8. The GT Equipment Group consisted of the grille mounted fog lamps. power front disc brakes, dual exhausts with chrome quad outlets (excluded on the 200 hp 289) F70x14 tires, GT gas cap, the handling package, rocker panel stripes and GT or GTA (for automatic transmission equipped GTs) emblems. A total of 24,079 Mustangs were equipped with the GT option.

The interior for 1967 was also redesigned. Most noticeable was the new dash, which featured integral air conditioning. The Tilt Away steering wheel was a new option, as was the fold-down rear seat option on the fastback. Other new options included cruise control, a folding glass rear window on the convertibles and an Exterior Decor Group which included a hood with rear-facing louvers that housed turn signal indicators, wheel well moldings and a pop open gas cap.
