Once again, based on the Plymouth Belvedere platform in its second year of production, the GTX was Plymouth's main performance intermediate. It was available only as a two door hardtop and convertible.

Standard equipment included heavy duty suspension with larger drum brakes (front discs were optional), a high level interior with vinyl bucket seats with console and floor mounted shifter, simulated hood scoops, dual exhausts with bright tips and a standard 375hp 440 c.i. Super Commando V-8 mated to the three speed Torqueflight automatic transmission. There were plenty of options to choose from, too.

For 1968 GTX received a minor restyle. New front grille and a rear tail light treatment provided a cleaner look. Lower door and rear quarter panel stripes terminated in somewhat more visible GTX lettering than 1967. Government mandated side marker lights, amber front and red rear, were used on all Chrysler cars and all GTX's came with bright rocker panel strips.

The GTX came with side-facing non-functional hood scoops. However, during the model year, a fully functional air intake system, the Air Grabber, became an option.

Mechanically, there was no change from 1967. The 375hp Super Commando

440 c.i. V-8 was standard equipment and the 426 Hemi optional. The 440's cylinder head now came with an open chamber design, and an improved intake manifold.

Production increased for 1968 but only 410 hardtop GTX's got the Hemi engine (while 36 convertibles were equipped with it.
