BMW K 100 (1983-1989) |
In 1983, BMW introduced its first K Series motorcycle - the K 100 - at the Paris Motor Show (where just 60 years earlier the very first BMW motorcycle made its debut). Launched in response to consumer demand for greater power and reduced noise and exhaust emissions the K Series models featured BMW's patented "Compact Drive System."
This technology consisted of a liquid-cooled four-cylinder inline engine arraged longitudinally, shaft drive to the rear wheel, and a Monolever swingarm to produce optimum power flow and minimum friction loss. The new concept was an immediate success, and the K 100 was named "Motorcycle of the Year" several years in a row by the German magazine, Motorrad.
