Chrysler Group Announces Year-End and December Sales; January Production Schedule AUBURN HILLS, Mich., Jan. 3 For the year 2000, Chrysler
Group sales were 2,522,695 units, dipping four percent from a record 2,638,561
vehicles sold in 1999. The Chrysler Group reported December U.S. sales of
167,672 vehicles compared with 204,754 in December of 1999, a 15 percent
decline.
For the calendar year 2000, Sport Utility Vehicle sales of 760,997 set an
all-time record, rising two percent compared with 1999. Total truck sales
(including minivan and SUVs) of 1,873,322 were off one percent. Car sales of
649,373 units dropped 13 percent, while minivan sales of 483,813 declined four
percent compared with 1999.
"The past year has been challenging for our company," said Deiter Zetsche,
President and CEO of Chrysler Group. "But we have seen bright spots with
record Sport Utility Vehicle sales led by the Chrysler PT Cruiser."
December SUV sales set a new record of 60,704 units sold, increasing seven
percent compared with December 1999. Total truck sales (including minivan and
SUVs) of 129,382 units dropped 11 percent, while car sales of 38,290 were down
25 percent. Total minivan sales of 25,939 were down 34 percent compared with
the previous year.
"In December, industry sales mirrored the weather in the Midwest -- cold,"
said Dieter Zetsche, President and CEO of Chrysler Group. "At this time, we
are all experiencing a painful combination of a softening market and excess
inventory."
In response to current market conditions, the Chrysler Group is taking
necessary measures to adjust inventory levels by temporarily idling some
assembly plants. Of its 12 U.S. and Canadian assembly plants, the company
will not operate:
-- 5 facilities the week of January 8, 2001: Bramalea (Brampton, Ontario),
Dodge City/Warren Truck (Warren, MI), Jefferson North (Detroit), Newark
(DE) and St. Louis North (MO) Assembly Plants;
-- 1 facility the week of January 15: The Newark (DE) Assembly Plant;
-- 3 facilities the week of January 22: Belvidere (IL), St. Louis North
(MO) and Toledo (OH) Assembly Plants; and
-- 5 facilities the week of January 29: The Belvidere (IL), Jefferson
North (Detroit), St. Louis North (MO), Toledo (OH) and Windsor
(Ontario) Assembly Plants.
