Bob:
I think the problem is too many platforms for all the GM divisions. For
example, Chevrolet has built a vehicle for just about every market segment
available, from SUVs to family cars, to sports cars, etc. Similarly, the
other GM divisions have done the same thing to a lesser extent. If GM would
have just targeted the different divisions at the different market segments,
like Pontiac for performance cars, Cadillac for luxury, Chevy for trucks,
Olds for minivans, Buick for family sedans, Saturn for blandmobiles, etc.
all the divisions would still have a place at GM.

I owned a Vista Cruiser. Coolest station wagon ever. Best race car tow
vehicle I ever had.
