NHRA: Houston sees Dave Schultz come back in winning form
30 October 2000
Sunoco Race Fuels/Kendall Motor Oil Suzuki rider Dave Schultz made an emotional and triumphant return to competition at this weekend's Matco Tools SuperNationals. Schultz, who had taken a four-race sabbatical in order to receive treatment for cancer, was back in the saddle in Houston and promptly won his second race of the season and forty-fifth of his storied Pro Stock Motorcycle career. After qualifying 6th with an elapsed time of 7.309 seconds and a top speed of 180.33 mph, Schultz had an exciting run to his 70th final round, including a dramatic hole-shot victory over defending Winston champion Matt Hines in the second round. Facing Geno Scali in the final, the result was never in doubt as Schultz grabbed the advantage at the start and matched his best elapsed time of the weekend at 7.292 seconds to secure the win.
