AMA Pro Racing announces 2001 Motocross/Superbike National Numbers

22 September 2000

PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- AMA Pro Racing has announced the rider numbers for

competitors in the AMA Chevy Trucks U.S. Motocross Championships and the AMA EA

Sports Supercross Series.

The numbers are based on a system instituted last year that is designed to

allow past champions, current champions and riders who have earned a top-10

national ranking to select and retain the same national number from year to

year.

This is how the system works: Number 1 is reserved for the current national

champion in each series; numbers 2 through 9 are reserved for past national

champions in active competition. Riders who completed the 1999 season ranked in

the top 10 chose any available national number, which they keep until they

withdraw from competition, or fail to earn a national point.

In 2000, riders who earned career numbers were: Jeremy McGrath, 2; Jeff

Emig, 3; Ricky Carmichael, 4; Mike LaRocco, 5; Steve Lamson, 6; Greg Albertyn,

7; Larry Ward, 10; Ezra Lusk, 11; Jimmy Button, 12; Kevin Windham, 14; Timmy

Ferry, 15; John Dowd, 16; Robbie Reynard, 17; Doug Henry, 19, and Damon Huffman,

20.

Riders carrying career numbers for the first time in 2001 are: Sebastien

Tortelli, 13; Brock Sellards, 18; Stephane Roncada, 21; Travis Pastrana, 199;

and David Vuillemin, 934.

The rest of the field are assigned available numbers corresponding to their

earned national ranking. Riders placing in the top 100 will be assigned

available two-digit numbers until those numbers are depleted.
