Motorcycle weekend racing results - World Grand Prix, Spain

19 September 2000

2000 FIM 500cc Grand Prix Series, Round 13: Circuit de la Comunitat Valenciana
Ricardo Tormo, Valencia, Spain, September 17, 2000

The last European round of the 500 Grand Prix Series saw most Honda riders
simply happy to get away uninjured. Australian Garry McCoy, using his unorthodox
and thrilling sideways style, took the win, his second in a row.

Reigning World Champion Repsol Honda rider Alex Criville crashed once in
practice, and then again in the 30-lap race at the tight, 2.5-mile circuit in
front of 110,000 fans. He tried to return to the race, but his NSR500 was too
badly damaged to continue. Emerson Honda Pons pilot Loris Capirossi also crashed
in the race, as did championship contender Valentino Rossi on the Nastro Azzurro
Honda. None of the riders were hurt, but Criville's championship bid has fallen
farther behind, and Rossi now has a 66-point deficit to Kenny Roberts Jr., who
leads the title chase and finished second today. Highest placing Honda riders
were Emerson Honda Pons' Alex Barros in fifth, Repsol Honda's Sete Gibernau in
eighth, and his teammate Tadayuki Okada in ninth.

Only three GPs remain this season, with the next in Brazil in three weeks, then
in Japan, and the season finale in Australia.
