American Motorcycle Association: Hagerstown AMA GNC preview

17 August 2000

PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- 19-year old phenom Nicky Hayden and his 16-year old

brother Roger Lee are preparing to toss a wrench into the points battle of the

AMA Progressive Insurance U.S. Flat Track Championships, when the series roars

into Hagerstown, Maryland, on Aug. 19.

Nicky, whose road-racing prowess has earned him international fame, will

return to the scene of his first Grand National win. During a break in last

year's road-racing schedule, the stars of Earl's Racing Team descended on

Hagerstown Speedway. Nicky--then 18-years old--ran away to take the checkers.

However, plenty of riders will be gunning for the top-spot on the

Hagerstown podium. Sacramento Harley-Davidson rider and defending Champion Chris

Carr will be looking to increase his current series points lead. Carr, of

Fleetwood, Penn., has 133-points and enjoys a 31-point lead over series

second-place rider Will Davis.

Davis, of Goldsboro, North Carolina, took a spill during last weekend's

Peoria TT race and chose to sit out the rest of the event, due to the head

injury he sustained during a softball game weeks before. Hopefully, Davis will

be healthy enough to keep the pressure on Carr.

Tied with Davis at 102 points, but ranked in third-place due to finish

positions, is Corbin's Joe Kopp. Kopp fought a nagging clutch problem at Peoria

last week, fixing it just before the main event to finish in second. With that

performance Kopp jumped two spots up in the point standings.

Also on tap for the August, 19 event will be round four of the

Harley-Davidson Sportster Performance series. Belleville, Illinois, native

Brian Thomas has 50-points, a scant 4-point lead over series second place rider

Scott Stump. Another 4-points behind Stump is defending champion Wille McCoy.

Hagerstown will also mark rider Shaun Russell's return to Sportster Performance

racing.

While at the Hagerstown Half-Mile, be sure to stop by the Progressive

Insurance tent for rider autograph sessions, video games, free magnetic

schedules, posters and other giveaway items.
