Pep Boys and Hertz Announce Alliance

31 July 2000

Hertz Local Edition to be offered in Pep Boys Supercenters

PHILADELPHIA - Pep Boys and The Hertz Corporation announced today the formation of an alliance whereby Hertz will offer its Local Edition rental program in approximately 200 Pep Boys Supercenters throughout the United States.

Hertz currently offers its service at Pep Boys locations in San Jose and San Leandro, California, and will continue to evaluate markets and roll out its services throughout the remainder of the year.

This new alliance allows Pep Boys to provide added value to its existing service customers by offering convenient access to rental cars.

Under this alliance, Hertz will receive a dedicated area inside Pep Boys Supercenters to operate Hertz Local Edition, Hertz' local suburban network of rental locations, and exterior signage with the company logo.

"This is a terrific alliance for Hertz and Pep Boys," said Mitchell G. Leibovitz, CEO of Pep Boys. "In addition to offering rental cars to our more than 9 million service customers, we believe that Hertz' brand equity and convenient, local availability will enhance our appeal, broaden our offering, and increase our customer base."

Earlier this month, Hertz announced the expansion of Local Edition nationally to include its popular pick-up and delivery service at more than 500 of its 600 local, suburban locations.

"Our alliance with Pep Boys will allow Hertz to offer rental car access to customers whose own vehicles are being serviced by Pep Boys," commented Joseph R. Nothwang, Hertz Executive Vice President and President, Vehicle Rental & Leasing, The Americas and Pacific. "Hertz Local Edition was established to facilitate the needs of local and insurance replacement customers and our association with Pep Boys will enable Hertz to further tap into the suburban car rental market."

Hertz operates a fleet of 525,000 vehicles from approximately 6,500 locations in more than 140 countries worldwide.
