AMA: Like a Rock Challenge winner to receive keys at Mid-Ohio
12 July 2000
PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- The winner of the Chevy Trucks Like a Rock Challenge will be decided at the July 14-16, American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) Chevy Trucks U.S. Superbike Championship doubleheader, at Mid-Ohio race course in Lexington, Ohio. In recognition of the extreme demands doubleheader race weekends place on Superbike riders and teams, Chevy Trucks created the Like A Rock Challenge to reward the rider who demonstrates he's the longest-lasting and most dependable, throughout the three doubleheader race weekends of the 2000 AMA Chevy Trucks Superbike Championship. The Like A Rock Challenge now comes down to the final doubleheader at Mid-Ohio. To be eligible for the Chevy Trucks Like A Rock Challenge, a rider competing in the Chevy Trucks Superbike Championship must win at least one of the six races comprising the three doubleheader rounds. The rider who accumulates the most Like A Rock Challenge points, and has won at least one of the six doubleheader races, will be awarded a new Chevy Silverado pickup truck valued at $32,000. Since its introduction, the Chevy Silverado has won 25 major automotive awards, including the J.D. Power Appeal Award, confirming its status as the benchmark in pickup trucks. The first 2000 season AMA Chevy Trucks U.S. Superbike Championship doubleheader race was held June 2-4 at Road Atlanta, in Braselton, Ga.; the second was held June 9-11 at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wis.; and the remaining doubleheader round is this weekend, July 14-16 at Mid-Ohio. Yoshimura Suzuki rider Mat Mladin -- the 1999 AMA Chevy Trucks U.S. Superbike Champ -- took an early lead in the Chevy Trucks Like a Rock Challenge, winning both of the races at Road Atlanta. Honda's young gun, 18-year Nicky Hayden, took back the Like A Rock lead by winning both Road America races. Mladin struggled at Road America, leaving Hayden with a 6 point lead in the race for the Silverado. The keys to the Chevy Silverado will be presented to the winner of the Like A Rock Challenge following Sunday's AMA Chevy Trucks U.S. Superbike Championship race at Mid-Ohio. John Farris, Chevy Truck assistant brand manager for Silverado, will present the keys to the Like A Rock Challenge winner during the Sunday, July 16 live broadcast. Both Saturday and Sunday's races will be broadcast live on Speedvision, starting at 2 p.m. eastern time.
