50 Fabulous Automobiles of the 20th Century Featured in WESTWAYS

5 July 2000

LOS ANGELES - WESTWAYS magazine's July/August issue features automotive expert Jonathan Thompson's list of the 50 most significant automobiles of the 20th Century.

Thompson, author of 10 car books, including, "The Fabulous Porsche 917", listed cars based on exterior design and his personal preference. The Fabulous 50 cars that "made a difference" includes the 1929 Duesenberg Model J, the 1946 MG TC, the 1959 Buick, the 1961 Jaguar E-Type, the 1962 Shelby Cobra, the 1990 Mazda Miata and Volkswagen's New Beetle.

What's the key to savvy shopping during a vacation trip? Seasoned WESTWAYS travel columnists Elizabeth Harryman and Paul Lasley offer tips on bargaining, duty-free shops, value-added tax refunds on goods, and U.S. customs procedures. Harryman and Lasley also share tips on how to save time in addition to money while shopping abroad.

The magazine's summer issue also features the contrast of traditional and modern Japan in the city of Asakusa. Author Charles Whipple takes WESTWAYS readers to a resilient city that has withstood a major earthquake and World War II bombings. Today, the city is a kaleidoscope of street markets, video arcades, bathhouses and stores. A major temple also is a popular destination in Asakusa for tourists and worshippers.

Continuing its yearlong Centennial coverage, WESTWAYS features Auto Club Historian Matthew Roth's historical perspective about constructing Pacific Coast Highway. Several vintage photos accompany the story. A 1926 picture taken in Laguna Beach depicts actors Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford celebrating the opening of the Laguna-Newport section of the coast road.

In time for summer, in "After Dark," WESTWAYS shares with readers Garden Grove's Historic Main Street Cruise, where classic car fanatics come in every Friday to compete for trophies. The weekly gathering draws 150 vehicles to Euclid Street and Garden Grove Boulevard. Visitors can also take in Mexican food at the Azteca Restaurant and go to the Crooner's Lounge.

The Auto Club has underwritten six episodes of "Road Trip" with Huell Howser, a public television series. Howser shares each "Road Trip" with WESTWAYS readers in a column by the same name. Howser's fourth destination in this issue is Antelope Valley. In this jaunt, Howser hits the Club Ed, the Antelope Valley Indian Museum, the Mojave Airport, and the Tehachapi Loop.

WESTWAYS, the lifestyle magazine for Southern California, features trends, automotive and travel trendsetters, lifestyle and home entertainment. Last year, WESTWAYS celebrated it 90th anniversary in publishing.
