Who Said Helmets Aren't Sexy?; Meet the Women of Steel

4 July 2000

Meet the Women of Steel During SPIRIT of Ford's 'Women in Racing' Week
DEARBORN, Mich. - Don't expect to see pom-poms and painted nails -- these
are women of steel! SPIRIT of Ford presents "Women in Racing" in conjunction
with the Summer of Racing. Get up close to over a dozen dynamic female racecar
drivers including Women's Global GT Series driver Audrey Zavodsky or 11-year-
old Junior Dragster Shelby Dominick. The week-long event begins on July 10
and lasts until July 14. To celebrate Women in Racing, all women and girls
will get complimentary admission during the event week.

"I think one of the most exciting parts of this event is the inspiration
these incredible women can provide to children everywhere -- and even to some
of us grown ups too! Most of the drivers balance two careers, like Audrey
Zavodsky who is a weekend racer and also head nurse at Ford Motor Company,"
says Jo Haas, Director of SPIRIT of Ford. "Plus the diversity in the driver's
ages is fantastic -- from age 11 to over 50! At 11, Shelby Dominick's
understanding of the art and science of racing gave her a great start and a
bright future to be sure."

Following is the schedule of some of the activities planned for this week:

    * Meet the Drivers -- Meet female race car drivers, get their autograph,
take your picture with them and learn first-hand what a career in racing is
all about.

    * Challenge a Pro -- Pick up a wrench and gas can and try to beat the
pros at the Pit Stop Challenge. If you can beat a racecar driver, you're well
on your way to the Women's Global GT!

    * Race a real driver -- Take control of a Scalextric slot car, whiz
around the track and try your best to land in the winner's circle. It's a
little harder when you're racing someone who knows what they are doing! Also,
GameWorks Auburn Hills brings their Ford Racing Zone to SPIRIT of Ford. Don't
miss your chance to burn rubber against a real driver in one of these
interactive video race games.

    * Real, Live Racecars -- Get a glimpse of real racecars that these women
use to whip around the track.

    * Prepare to Get Greasy -- Take apart car parts and build something
new...or rev up your imagination and start from scratch to design your very
own racecar.

    * Cool Racing Stuff -- The Exit Ramp, SPIRIT of Ford's unique gift shop,
is your summer station for stocking up on distinctive racing merchandise.

"This is an event that you don't want to miss. Meet these dynamic women
of the racing circuit and be inspired by what they have accomplished," says
Haas.
