Visteon Contribution Puts Music in Detroit's Oldest School
26 June 2000
DEARBORN, Mich. - A $25,000 grant from Visteon Corporation through the Comcast/VH1 Save the Music Foundation will help create the first full-time music program in Detroit's oldest elementary school. Visteon's contribution funded the purchase of a full-range of musical instruments for the 400 students at McMillan Elementary School. "Supporting and strengthening the communities in which we do business is a core company value at Visteon," said Kevin Singer, Executive Director, Global Corporate Communications, Visteon. "Visteon strongly supports the VH1 Save the Music Foundation mission to restore music education in public schools. We are pleased to provide funding for our neighbor -- McMillan -- and to be part of this important program." Visteon's grant purchased 32 instruments for McMillan's music program, including flutes, clarinets, saxophones, trumpets, trombones, cymbals and drums. In addition to being able to provide instruments for students next fall, McMillan will have a full-time music teacher for the first time. In its 105-year history, McMillan has never had its own full-time music education program. The instruments were presented to McMillan Elementary School principal Wes Ganson during a celebration today. The event was designed to raise awareness of the importance of early music education and its effect on basic learning skills. "It's exciting to see all of the instruments here today and to know that they soon will be in the hands of students who never have before experienced the magic of music," added Singer.
