DAPCEP students Krystal Smith, Erin C. Wright, Lynnea O'Nita Blocker, Tarik B. Green and Anthony R. Turner received a $2,000 scholarship to help them attain a college degree. Krystal Smith will graduate from Renaissance High School in Detroit with a plan to fulfill a childhood promise made to her cousin, born with AIDS. Krystal's goal to become a biomedical engineer is one step closer having received the Tenneco Automotive scholarship. Erin C. Wright will graduate from Cass Technical High School in Detroit in June and would like to pursue a degree in engineering. Erin hopes to be a trailblazer in her field and believes that a good education is the best place to begin. Lynnea O'Nita Blocker graduates from Cass Technical High School in Detroit in June and plans to attend Florida A&M University to study sports medicine with an emphasis on physical and respiratory therapy. Lynnea's goal is to develop programs that will lead to healthier living. Tarik B. Green will graduate from Cass Technical High School in Detroit this month and plans to attend the University of Michigan in the fall. Tarik's five-year educational goal is to obtain a master's in business administration with an emphasis on information systems. Anthony R. Turner credits his DAPCEP involvement with sparking his interest in engineering. In June, he will graduate from the Detroit High School for the Fine & Performing Arts and expects to fulfill his dream of becoming a chemical engineer. Anthony's goal is to have a successful career, but also to give back to the community that inspired him to excel. Tim Jackson, Senior Vice President and General Manager North American Original Equipment of Tenneco Automotive, presented the winners with a scholarship award certificate on June 15 at the Tenneco Automotive Grand Prix of Detroit Sneak Preview event on Belle Isle. Said Jackson, "We are pleased to help these talented students with their college careers. They are truly inspirational students and we are honored to be able to help them achieve their goals as well as help solve the need for engineers in the workforce. As Detroit is the nation's seventh largest metropolitan population and headquarters to dozens of top industrial corporations, so the need for engineers never ends. Historically, less than half of the children in the United States are interested in science by the third grade. That lack of interest constrains industry growth. One of DAPCEP's goals is to make sure Detroit continues as an industrial leader by getting students interested in science at an early age, thereby fueling the engineering workforce. Tenneco Automotive understands the need for programs such as DAPCEP to keep the engineering force alive. "The DAPCEP program is a great opportunity for students to learn about the field of engineering and possibly generate interest in a career," said Margaret Tucker of DAPCEP. "We are fortunate that Tenneco Automotive believes in the future of these students as well as the engineering profession."
