AMA: Flat Track action back on the throttle

16 May 2000

AMA FLAT-TRACK ACTION BACK ON THE THROTTLE

PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- After its customary spring hiatus, the AMA

Progressive Insurance U.S. Flat Track Championship roars back to the track

at the Delaware State Fairgrounds half-mile in Harrington, Del., May 20th.

This weekend's event could be anybody's race on Harrington's

multi-line surface. Texas native Terry Poovey, who won this race in 1984,

would seem to be the rider to beat, coming off his commanding win in

Daytona in March. But this will be the first event of the season when the

750s take the field, and the competition will be tough.

To be sure, all eyes will be on Rich King in his second outing with

the Harley-Davidson factory team. King, who had raced a Honda RS750,

switched to Harley's venerable XR750 for the 1999 season and pulled down

second-place in points. Now Harley's lead rider, King will have a chance to

better his standings after failing to make the main in Daytona earlier this

year.

Also slated for the weekend's activities is the first SuperTrapp

SuperTracker event of the 2000 season. The 1999 Champion, Joe Kopp of Mica,

Wash., will be on hand to defend his title against an expanded field of new

machines and riders. Gone will be series second-place rider Steve Morehead,

who will be attending to his new duties as an AMA Pro Racing official. This

puts the pressure on J.R. Schnabel of West Bend, Wisc. Schnabel placed

third overall during the 1999 season, just 24 points behind Kopp.

Qualifying heats begin at 6 p.m. with Opening Ceremonies at 7:30 p.m..

For ticket information, call (302) 697-3273. The race will be broadcast

Monday, June 5, at 6:30 p.m. EST on ESPN2. The SuperTrapp SuperTracker

event will air Monday, June 12, at 6 p.m. EST on ESPN2. Check local

listings as broadcast times may vary.
