Service Technicians Society Announces Alliance To Promote Technician Recruitment
11 May 2000
Warrendale, PA - The Service Technicians Society (STS) has formed an alliance with J&B Motorsports, Inc. and Bobby Martin, driver of the CAP Avenger Funny Car, to focus on recruiting tomorrow's technicians. "Attracting students with the technological skills needed to survive in this profession has been a challenge for the automotive industry and one that must be addressed", said Wayne Juchno, Managing Director of STS. This new partnership brings this issue to the public through one of the fastest growing spectator events today --motorsports. J&B Motorsports and Bobby Martin compete in the NHRA Drag Racing Federal- Mogul Alcohol Funny Car Series. The team debuted their new car at the MAC Tools Gator Nationals in March. Bobby qualified 8th and in the first round of eliminations ran a 5.82 at 245 mph. The car shows the public the team's larger objective by the striking slogan "training tomorrow's technicians" that appears on the inside panels. "That's what made this partnership so attractive to STS, it helps us fulfill our mission and presents this profession to the public in a high-tech exciting environment", Juchno stated. Off the track, the team is committed to educating students on career opportunities in the automotive service and repair industry. Martin is a frequent speaker for the DaimlerChrysler Dealer Apprenticeship Program and active in the NHRA Youth and Education Services Program. This program develops track site and classroom programs for students in kindergarten through college. "We are excited to welcome STS as a new team sponsor", said Barbara McGaffic, President of J&B Motorsports. Martin has driven the Chrysler Dealer Apprenticeship Program sponsored CAP Dodge Avenger Federal-Mogul Funny Car since 1997. Since joining forces with J&B Motorsports this season, in addition to STS, the team has added Mopar Performance, Energy Release Automotive Products (ER) and Snap-on Industrial Tools as sponsors. "We're building a strong team on and off the track to bring attention to the critical issue of technician recruitment", said McGaffic. An affiliate of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE International), STS was established in 1996 and currently has more than 6,500 members in 50 states and 24 foreign countries. The Society provides a forum for technical information exchange, skill development, and networking with other technicians, shop owners, and industry representatives in all mobility service industries.
