2000 NEW YORK AUTO SHOW Fun For The Whole FamilyNEW YORK, April 14 1000 new cars and trucks, 15 world debuts, 30+ concepts cars, amphibious tanks, race cars, virtual reality games, the Batmobile, roll-over simulators, classic cars, and dozens of exotics top the list of attractions at this year's New York International Automobile Show at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center from Saturday, April 22 to Sunday, April 30. "The 2000 Show has more cars, more trucks, more fun and more entertainment than ever before," said John LaSorsa, auto show chairman. "Visitors to this year's show will probably have to make more than one visit to get the whole New York Auto Show experience," he continued. Here are some of the special attractions that will amuse and excite the whole family: "Holy Automation.....is that the Batmobile?" The original motion picture Batmobile used in the feature films "Batman" and "Batman Returns" will make its New York debut at this year's Show. The 19-foot-long and 8-foot-wide crime-fighting machine, has 24" wheels and is capable of shooting a 15-foot flame from its 1500 HP gas turbine engine. The Batmobile is set to return -- to the small screen at least -- as part of Onstar's new ad campaign. The in-vehicle communications, safety and security service should help the Caped Crusader keep one step ahead of his arch rivals...and that's no joke. New York's Automotive Century Exhibition -- In celebration of its 100-year anniversary, the New York International Automobile Show has created a special display of 18 cars and trucks that have debuted or appeared at North America's first auto show over the past century. The display will be divided into six vignettes supported by huge historical photo blow-ups and dramatic lighting and sound. U.S. Marine Corps. -- On display will be two LAV-25s. These fully amphibious, all-terrain, all-weather, light-armored vehicles weigh over 24,000 pounds and can reach speeds of up to 60 mph. Cost? A staggering $900,000. Exhilarating Exotics - No auto show would be complete without a "wish list" display -- the cars that are too expensive and impractical for the daily commute, but whose ownership we all covet. So, if it's the opulence of a Rolls Royce or Bentley, the raw power of a Lamborghini, Ferrari or DeTomaso, or the speed and agility of a Lotus or Panoz that gets your blood pumping, the Crystal Palace's Exotic Car Exhibition is the place for you. The Venturer Project -- Check out the New Jersey Venturer, a hybrid electric vehicle built by New Jersey government, students, and private industry. It incorporates a 55-horsepower Solectria electric motor and nickel-cadmium batteries to store electric power. The Venturer also adds a unique source of power: a hydrogen-powered fuel cell. Concours' D'Elegance of the Eastern U.S. -- The legends live on in this elegant display of unforgettable automobile classics. See the dream makers in person as this exhibit celebrates the best of the 20th century. Digital Tech Frontier -- Another industry debut! You're in control for this fast-paced virtual reality pod race. Feel the impact with the 'force feedback' steering wheel as you fly through this four-minute adventure of sight and sound. Ferrari 355 Challenge Race Car -- The featured Ferrari is a limited edition, factory prepared F-355 Challenge Race Car produced for the Special Challenge Race Series Run. The particular car has been racing in the South American series for Team Venezuela and is currently being driven in the North American Challenge series. Loco Motion Simulators, Inc. -- Buckle up and hold on! Take your place for a wild ride in the driver's seat of a racecar, biplane, alpine sled, and a roller coaster. New York State Police Roll-Over Simulator -- Take a ride on the roll-over simulator and you will want to become a more careful driver. Greenwich Concours' D'Elegance -- 2000 Auto Show visitors will get a taste of the high life thanks to a sumptuous display of classic cars from the Greenwich Concours d'Elegance -- acclaimed as one of the top-ranked events of its type in the country. The display includes a voluptuous 1937 Delahaye with Figoni & Falaschi coachwork, a 1934 Auburn boattail Speedster, a 1957 Cadillac Eldorado Brougham, and a 1946 Chrysler Town & Country convertible. CANstruction -- On display at the Auto Show will be a New York City Taxi made entirely of cans. In cities all across the country teams of architects and engineers compete to design and build giant structures made entirely from canned foods. The results are "canned art." All of the food generated as a result of the competitions is donated to Second Harvest Food Banks for distribution to thousands of emergency feeding programs. The charity's mission is to "CANstruct a World Without Hunger." Comptech -- Want to find out how to make a hot car even hotter? On display will be an Acura NSX custom equipped with Comptech headers, exhausts, superchargers and other high performance equipment. Lake George Antique Boat & Auto Museum -- This exhibit will feature many rare antique cars including a 1907 Maxwell, 1935 Bentley, 1936 MG PB, and a 1960 Mercedes 190 SL.
