MTBE Controversy Experts & Free Report Available; Must We Choose Between Clean Air or Clean Water?

SANTA BARBARA, Calif.--March 27, 2000--Much of the reportage regarding the California ban of MTBE in automobile fuel focuses on the tug-of-war between advocates of clean air and clean water standards. Governor Gray Davis and state and federal legislators face two critical questions: (1) whether adequate feedstocks and production capacity can be brought on line in time to meet MTBE replacement demands and (2) what strategies will ensure a successful transition, at the same time yielding the greatest public benefit in its accomplishment?
According to John Trotti, editor of MSW Management, "As early as November 1995, our publication, Remediation Management, warned of the possible dangers of MTBE to water resources. As evidence of the threat mounted, our May/June 1999 issue of MSW Management pointed out the opportunity for conversion of much of the organic fraction of the municipal solid wastestream as a replacement. There are a number of waste-to-synfuel technologies that are well past the maybe stage. Now with the almost certain restriction on the use of MTBE as a component of automotive fuel we may be facing just the kind of opportunity that's needed to jump-start the introduction of a new product for waste managers to market."
A free report on MTBE alternatives is now available from MSW Management, by calling (805) 681-1300, ext. 12 or e-mailing editor@forester.net.

    Note to Editors:

Pending legislation in California (AB-1939 introduced by Bob Margett (R-Arcadia) and Edward Vincent (D-Inglewood)) as well as legislation in other states and on the Federal level, will continue to generate interest in the MTBE controversy. Complimentary subscriptions to MSW Management, the magazine for the municipal solid waste industry, will continue to lead coverage on this issue.
