Delayed Reaction to Signs
of Brake Trouble?

Too many drivers keep their fingers crossed when they suspect potential car
problems, according to the Car Care Council’s Women’s Board. Surveying 263
women, 83% of whom are responsible for the maintenance of their vehicles,
the results showed that most of the participants procrastinate.

The questionnaire asked how soon they’d respond to such things as the brake
warning signal light or strange sounds when applying the brakes. Only a
third of 263 surveyed say they’d have it checked out right away. Nearly half
would look into it some time that week and one out of five would do it some
time that month. How many would make the decision to have brake work done?
56%.

One out of five did not know whether or not their vehicle was equipped with
an anti-lock braking system (ABS), but 52% were aware that ABS requires a
different driving style.

Where do they have brake work done? The independent repair shop and brake
specialist ranked first and second. While reasons for choice of facility
ranged widely, trust and convenience were the most popular responses.

The next survey covers questions dealing with vehicle repair shop attributes
and is available by calling the Council at (419) 734-5343. These are good to
pass out to your employees and customers. The surveys are also good to use
as handouts for car care clinics and consumer shows.
