GEICO Announces New Officer Promotions
WASHINGTON, Feb. 9 -- The GEICO companies today announced
five new officer appointments, naming Bill Roberts executive vice president,
Chuck Davies senior vice president, David Schindler senior vice president, Tom
Wells senior vice president and chief financial officer, and Mary Zarcone
assistant vice president of Region I underwriting.
Roberts has served as senior vice president of GEICO's four insurance
companies with responsibility for marketing, underwriting and pricing for each
of these companies since 1997. He joined GEICO in 1984, and served as vice
president of marketing, assistant vice president for underwriting in Region
III, and group vice president. Roberts earned a Ph.D. in sociology from Temple
University in Philadelphia, Pa. "Having served GEICO for nearly a generation,
Bill brings wisdom grounded in experience, expertise and enthusiasm for our
missions," said CEO Tony Nicely. "He is uniquely qualified to help lead GEICO
through future expansion and growth."
Davies served as group vice president and general counsel for GEICO's four
insurance companies since December 1998. From 1992 to 1998, he was vice
president and general counsel. Davies began his career at GEICO in 1968 and
held positions of increasing responsibility in the office of the general
counsel. He was appointed vice president and deputy general counsel in 1987.
He received his J.D. degree in 1967 from Georgetown University Law Center in
Washington, D.C. "Chuck has done an outstanding job for us as group vice
president and general counsel," Nicely said. "He is a capable and competent
leader in this critical arena."
Schindler became group vice president of GEICO's four companies in 1995,
with responsibility for GEICO's human resources, staff development and
communications functions as well as the office of quality administration.
Since joining GEICO in 1970, Schindler has served in a variety of positions,
including claim manager, claim director, assistant vice president of a
regional claim department, human resources vice president and regional vice
president. He holds a bachelor's degree in business administration from The
American University in Washington, D.C. "David brings 30 years of experience
in a variety of roles to this position," said Nicely. "His breadth of
experience has served GEICO well in the past, and will continue to do so."
Wells has been group vice president and controller for GEICO Corporation
since August 1992. He assumes chief financial officer responsibilities upon Al
Sparks' retirement. Wells joined GEICO in 1980 as director of corporate
financial reporting. One year later, he was appointed associate controller.
Before joining GEICO, Wells was an audit manager with Ernst and Whinney,
Washington, D.C. "Tom has a proven track record of excellence with the
company," said Nicely. "His financial expertise and leadership will be
invaluable to our future."
Zarcone has served as Region II's service director since 1996. She started
as a sales and service counselor at GEICO's New York office in 1972, moved to
claims in 1975 and advanced to continuing unit examiner. She then supervised
Region II's direct handling unit, and was promoted to manager of that unit in
1988 and continuing unit manager in 1992. She became director of residual
market underwriting in 1995. Zarcone graduated with a BA in business
management from Long Island University. "Mary will have a lot to offer Region
I as it continues to grow," said Robert Miller, regional vice president.
