SBSC Blasts Administration Plan for Light Trucks and Sport Utility Vehicles

WASHINGTON--Dec. 22, 1999--In response to the Environmental Protection Agency's recent announcement regarding emission standards for light trucks and Sport Utility Vehicles, Small Business Survival Committee (SBSC) President Christopher Wysocki issued the following statement:
"Once again, the Administration is showing its true colors by coming down hard on small businesses. Men and women who rely on small trucks to stay in business will be severely impacted by this rule, and people's lives will certainly be put at risk.
"We all want the cleanest possible environment, but the Administration's attempts to mandate clean air through these draconian rules and regulations that clamp down on the businesses that can least afford to purchase expensive new equipment is simply bad policy. The Administration is putting small businesses at risk by this drastic measure when the market is already seeing movement towards fuel efficiency.
"Increased fuel efficiency and lower emissions from small truck engines is an admirable goal, but small businesses that depend on small trucks and Sport Utility Vehicles to deliver their products or services will only see lower performance and higher prices. The mandate imposed by the EPA is just the latest in a series of attacks on America's most precious resource -- the entrepreneurs who open and operate small businesses."
SBSC is a national, non-profit and non-partisan advocacy organization based in Washington, DC that represents more than 50,000 small business men and women across the United States. For more information, please visit the SBSC web site at http://www.sbsc.org or call 202/785-0238.
