Goodyear Retires Scrap Tires in California Coastal Cleanup
SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 16 -- Volunteers last month retrieved
tons of debris from California beaches during the state's coastal cleanup day,
including a pile of scrap tires, a box of chocolates, a Danish driver's
license, a charred mannequin leg, $1,600 in endorsed checks and a carved
pumpkin filled with cooked eggs.
Goodyear dealers accepted dozens of scrap tires found by volunteers who
combed the waterfront during Coastal Clean-Up Day. In addition to ensuring
the proper handling of these scrap tires, Goodyear paid for the recycling or
disposal costs. Among the tires recovered were a 220-pound aircraft tire and
a four-foot-high truck tire.
"Californians should be commended for their diligence in responsibly
disposing of their scrap tires during the year," said Goodyear's Northwest
Region General Business Manager Enoch Turner. "During the 1998 cleanup, more
than 800 tires were retrieved. We are pleased that this year, only a fraction
of that number were found."
Goodyear and many of its independent dealers welcomed the opportunity to
help, Turner said. "Throughout the year, Goodyear and its dealers demonstrate
environmental stewardship, and we see our participation in this cleanup as
another way to protect the ecological integrity of our beautiful state."
The California Coastal Commission, event sponsor and official tabulator of
the collection, said more than 502,000 pounds of trash and recyclables were
picked up, although the final debris tally is not yet complete.
    Participating Goodyear dealers were:  Eureka:  Mulkey & Kovacovich;
Fortuna: Hummel Tire; Pacific Realm: Hayward - Southland Tire & Service; A
Street Tire & Service; Newark - Newark Tire & Service; and Oakland - Eastmont
Auto Service; Pacific Grove - Pacific Grove Tire & Service; Seaside - Seaside
Tire & Service; Sacramento - Mack Road Tire & Service; Morgan Hill - Morgan
Hill Tire & Auto; Alameda - Ry-nck Tire & Auto Centers; Venice - USA Express
Tire; Huntington Beach - USA Express Tire.
